The Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Thassos – Pros & Cons
Thassos, also known as “the Emerald Island”, is one of the many wonderful islands Greece has to offer; however, not all neighborhoods will fit your needs, whether you are traveling on a budget or want to enjoy your trip with comfortable accommodations.
Besides, everyone is unique and will want to do different things, from hiking and visiting monuments to simply resting in the sun and enjoying some quality time.
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered: let’s dive into the list of the best areas of Thassos!
THE Best Place to Stay in Thassos: Limenaria
Limenaria is simply the best place to stay in all of Thassos. It is a town with incredible natural landscapes and long, pristine sand beaches that I’m sure you will love.
Located about 40 km / 25 mi south of Limenas, this lively area offers tons of activities for you to try, from sunbathing on the beach to diving into the turquoise waters of the island.
Besides, what I find particularly lovely about Limenaria is its unique, natural swimming pool, situated in the eastern part of the town. There, you will be able to jump from up to 8 m / 26 ft if you so desire! Be careful though, as the path that leads there isn’t the easiest one out there, but trust me, it’s going to be all worth it once you see the pool.
Beautiful sand beaches
Lots of activities
Natural swimming pool
Many tourists
Where to Stay in Limenaria
Sure, Limeria is the best place to stay on the island of Thassos, but it doesn’t mean that it is easy to find and pick good accommodation from the multitudes of available options. In fact, there are plenty of hotels for you to choose from, and if you stay in a more peaceful area, you might want to compensate by paying for a better hotel than the one you could’ve rented in more active areas.
In any case, no matter your situation, here are my personal top picks:
✅ Best Hotel: Thalassies
If you can’t pick one accommodation from all the ones available in Limenaria, just go for Thalassies; trust me, nothing can go wrong with this hotel.
Thalassies is a 3-star hotel located on the beachfront. It has its own swimming pool, gym, and sauna, and is situated only 200 m / 650 ft away from the center of Limenaria. Besides, I’m sure you will be charmed by its traditional Greek cuisine by the poolside.
✨ Luxury Choice: Blue Dream Palace Trypiti Beach Resort & Spa
Many travelers want to spend the most comfortable and memorable stay in the Cyclades, and if that is your case in Limenaria, you should choose Blue Dream Palace.
This beach resort is actually one of the overall best hotels in all of Limenaria. It has a very large, outdoor swimming pool, and offers majestic views on the Aegean Sea: simply stunning!
💰 Budget Pick: Pantheon Studios & Apartments
Traveling on a tight budget in such a busy area as the Cyclades can be very difficult. There are tons of tourists, life isn’t very affordable as a whole, and finding decent and affordable accommodation is painful.
In Limenaria though, Pantheon Studios & Apartments will do the trick. These apartments are located in the middle of a forest and are traditionally decorated. On the whole, for such an affordable price, they offer fantastic value for money.
Best Area to Stay in Thassos for Families: Kinira
Kinira is a small maritime area located on the eastern coast of Thassos, about 22 km / 13.6 mi away from Limenas. It is truly a hidden gem, offers wonderful landscapes, and is becoming more and more active in terms of tourism, although it remains very quiet for now.
If you are traveling to the Cyclades with your loved ones or as a group in general, I’m sure your main concerns will be the number of tourists and noise, as well as readily available and peaceful beaches.
Well, you’ve probably guessed it by now, but Kinira has all of this. It has 2 beaches, with pebbles and sand, and is the nearest village to Paradisos, one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island. Besides, it is very calm as a whole, so enjoy it while you can and book your trip with your family to Kinira!
Peaceful area
Fantastic beaches
Not much to do
Where to Stay in Kinira
Despite being relatively small and not the most active village on the island, Kinira still has plenty of hotels for you to choose from. Plus, different travelers will have different needs, which is why I compiled my top 3 picks depending on your financial situation:
✅ Best Hotel: Alfa Boutique Hotel
Most of the time, boutique hotels are fairly expensive and for very specific needs. In Kinira though, Alfa Boutique Hotel is simply your best pick, considering how affordable it is and how incredible the service is.
This hotel has it all: its interior is tastefully decorated and cozy, while it sits only 350 m / 1,150 ft away from Paradisos!
✨ Luxury Choice: Maranton Beach Hotel
Another good pick for everyone but especially couples is the Maranton Beach Hotel, my fancy option for your next stay in Kinira. Its main perks are its large, beautiful outdoor swimming pool, its views of the Aegean Sea, and its peaceful location, in the middle of verdant vegetation.
Maranton Beach Hotel offers a fitness center and a sauna, as well as a playground and a paddling pool for younger travelers: ideal for families!
💰 Budget Pick: AGATHA STUDIOS PARADISE
One of the main issues when traveling with your loved ones is that you have to pay for lots of people, and budget picks can often be a good choice. In Kinira, I advise you to go for AGATHA STUDIOS PARADISE.
These studios have a simple interior, but it doesn’t really matter, as they are located right next to Paradisos, where you could spend most of your time with your family. It also has a terrace for you to unwind on at the end of a long day on the sand.
Where to Stay on Thassos for the Beach: Skala Panagia
Skana Panagia is an incredible and very successful beach resort that is attracting more and more tourists. It is situated along the shores of the well-known Golden Beach, one of the longest sand beaches in all of the Cyclades, made of white-golden sand and occasional stones and pebbles.
Overall, there is no better place on the island of Thassos than Skala Panagia if what you are looking for is to spend a memorable stay on the beach, sunbathing in the warm climate of the Greek Islands.
Not only will you be able to enjoy the sand and relax in Skala Panagia, but you will also enjoy the multitudes of possible activities such as ball games, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, jet skis, or parascending. Also, compared to other resorts in Thassos, Skala Panagia is fairly recent and is thus of high standard.
Best beaches on the island
Recent equipment
Only for the beach
Where to Stay in Skala Panagia
There are lots of hotels in Skala Panagia and I can already feel your frustration trying to pick one of them.
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered, and here are my top 3 personal picks:
✅ Best Hotel: Komninos Rooms
Wait, stop looking anywhere else: nothing is better than Komninos Rooms in Skala Panagia!
This hotel offers bright and tidy rooms and is situated next to the lively center of the village. It even has private balconies with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea or the neighboring mountains. This accommodation is overall simply decorated and has a TV and a fridge, and I’m sure you will love it.
✨ Luxury Choice: The Oak Hotel
The Oak Hotel should be your go-to if you are looking for a luxurious stay in Skala Panagia. This 4-star hotel has modern architecture and beautiful decorations. Some of its many perks are its very efficient service, its large, outdoor swimming pool, and its wide, sunny terrace.
No matter your time of arrival, the Oak Hotel will welcome you with a smile and offer you a free, private parking spot. While couples particularly love it, I’m convinced this hotel will respond to anyone’s needs.
💰 Budget Pick: Thassos Inn
If you have already seen what Thassos Inn looks like, you won’t believe me when I tell you it’s my budget pick: yes, I’m serious, this beautiful and modern accommodation is one of the most affordable stays in Skala Panagia, and definitely the best of them!
Thassos Inn is, according to me, simple yet efficient: it has all of the furniture you need without being overwhelming, is fully equipped, and is tastefully decorated.
Where to Stay Cheap in Thassos: Skala Potamia
Skala Potamia is a very popular summer resort located near Golden Coast Beach, on the southernmost portion of Golden Beach. Despite this, it is the most affordable place in Thassos. Aside from hotels, life there is much cheaper than in the main points of interest of the island. On the other hand, there is not much to do in terms of activities.
However, what I particularly love about Skala Potamia is not only the beach but also the fact that you can enjoy the wilderness of the Cyclades: aside from the sand, you could also walk in the neighboring forests and mountains, go for hikes, and discover unique areas.
Another great perk of Skala Potamia is the antiquities and archaeological discoveries, which are characteristic of Ancient Greece. Finally, there are many shops and restaurants there.
Most affordable area
Traditional houses
Little to no activities
Where to Stay in Skala Potamia
Choosing a budget-friendly destination in the Cyclades is great. You could ever simply save up more money, or use it for extra activities and discoveries.
What’s not great though is to pick an ideal accommodation in such a place. Because I know how annoying it can be, I have listed my top 3 picks, there you go:
✅ Best Hotel: Korina Hotel
If you have a hard time picking a hotel in Skala Potamia, you should stop thinking and book a stay in Korina Hotel. This beautiful, 3-star hotel is ideal for 2 travelers but works for much more than that.
It is very tastefully decorated, has an outstanding swimming pool, and is located in a beautiful and verdant area.
✨ Luxury Choice: Ntinas Filoxenia Hotel & Spa
Looking for the most comfortable stay in an affordable area? Pretty smart if you ask me: choosing a cheaper destination to enjoy more comfort is a very good compromise in my opinion, and Ntinas Filoxenia Hotel & Spa will definitely satisfy you.
This luxurious hotel does indeed have a spa. It also has a poolside bar in which you will enjoy coffee and snacks all around the day, as well as multitudes of shops and restaurants in the vicinity.
💰 Budget Pick: Porto Thassos
With free, on-site parking spots and a view of the mountain, the independent accommodation that Porto Thassos will make you wonder if I made a mistake by picking it as a budget option.
But well, no, I didn’t, as it is very affordable and offers incredible value for money! If you want the overall most affordable stay in Thassos, pick Porto Thassos and stay in Skala Potamia, you won’t be disappointed.
Thassos Where to Stay for the Local Experience: Skala Sotiros
When traveling to the Greek Cyclades, most people look for a beautiful beach and a spot in the sun. And while I can completely get that, I sometimes feel like what I want to try most is to spend a stay with an authentic experience, and I’m sure lots of you do as well (at least those of you who are reading this right now!). If that’s also something you would like to do, I suggest you head to Skala Sotiros, a small fishing village on the seafront.
This village has plenty of peaceful beaches and a small but well-organized marina. It definitely has a unique feel to it, with its lines of palm trees, quite unusual in Greece, and its relaxing atmosphere.
Interestingly enough, the best traditional bread in all of Thassos can be bought in Skala Sotiros. There are also plenty of dishes you must try, and I’m sure you will enjoy connecting with local people in the small fishing village. Need a unique and genuine experience in Thassos? Go for Skala Sotiros!
Calm atmosphere
Traditional fishing village
Connection with locals
Wonderful cuisine
Mostly for history fans
No activities
Far away from the action
Where to Stay in Skala Sotiros
Skala Sotiros is a traditional, Greek fishing village, meaning it can be rough to find convenient accommodation. While you will enjoy the genuine experience of the area, you still need to pick a place to stay; be at ease, your 3 best options can be found right below:
✅ Best Hotel: Orama Thassos
No accommodation is better than Orama Thassos in Skala Sotiros. Well, at least for the overall compromise and general needs.
This hotel has its own private portion of the beach, is located right next to the sea, and has an on-site bar, a garden, and free parking spots. Each morning, you will be delighted to start your day with the traditional Greek breakfast served at Orama Thassos.
✨ Luxury Choice: House of Farros
While House of Farros isn’t really a house, it is still a large, entire apartment found in Skala Sotiros. You won’t find more comfort than the entire accommodation for yourself, with its terrace, its balcony, and its panoramic views of the sea.
This beautiful apartment is located by the seaside. It has 2 rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a private garden. Also, if you need to travel around the island of Thassos, you will be able to rent a car immediately from the accommodation!
💰 Budget Pick: Sotiras Rooms
Last but definitely not least, Sotiras Rooms is one of the most affordable yet convenient accommodations I have seen in a very long while. For such a low price, it offers incredible services and perks and is overall rated 8.6 out of 10.
While you may think that these rooms might be lost in the middle of nowhere, they are actually right next to the sea, and have a furnished balcony with views of the sea and the mountains: overall, a very solid choice!
