The Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Strasbourg – Pros & Cons

Discover what each neighborhood has to offer and the pros and cons of each right below.

THE BEST Area to stay in Strasbourg: Petite France

petite france is the best place to stay in strasbourg france

You probably have already heard of it, but the Petite France is the core and soul of Strasbourg. It is where you will find all of its iconic views, with its gorgeous Alsatian houses and lovely water canals.

Besides being located near the iconic Strasbourg cathedral, it boasts so many tasty restaurants that you will never get to try all of them; believe me, Alsatian cuisine is absolutely excellent and renowned across all of France!

Finally, while I believe Petite France is a neighborhood that everyone will love, it is even better for couples, as it is exceptionally romantic, cozy, and intimate. It’s just amazing!

Pros

Typical Alsatian houses

Romantic atmosphere

Excellent restaurants

Lovely canals

Cons

Pretty expensive

Here’s my selection of the best accommodations in Petite France by travel style:

✅ Best Hotel: Petite France Apartment Strasbourg: This entire apartment has it all. With its modern and comfortable decoration, it remains affordable whilst offering exceptionally high-standard equipment.

✨ Luxury Choice: Hotel & Spa REGENT PETITE FRANCE: Not only is it extremely classy and stylishly decorated, but it also boasts an excellent on-site restaurant, as well as private swimming pools. Don’t forget about its location, right in front of a sluice gate; superb!

💰 Budget Pick: STUDIO PETITE FRANCE STRASBOURG: Excellently located, it is furnished with all the equipment you could possibly want, and is also nicely decorated. Overall, a cute, cozy place!

Where to Stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Market: Grande Île

grande ile is one of the best place where to stay in strasbourg

Strasbourg hosts every year one of the most iconic Christmas markets in Europe. Taking place from late November to Christmas Eve, it is THE French market you should visit.

With its rows of wooden chalets serving typical, tasty cuisine, as well as the iconic mulled wine of Alsace, it draws thousands of tourists every year.

And, if you want to stay as close to the Christmas Market as possible, you should stay anywhere in the city center of Strasbourg, also known as the Grande Île.

Translating to “large island”, it forms the heart of Strasbourg, and all of it is both typical and lovely. There, you will find the stunning, gothic cathedral, as well as plenty of museums and cute streets.

Pros

Tons of museums

Gothic cathedral

Lovely streets

Best location

Cons

Lots of tourists

Here’s my selection of the best accommodations in Grande Île by travel style:

✅  Best Hotel: Hôtel Gutenberg: This place is affordable, comfortable, and perfectly located, and I would instantly pick it for my next holiday in Strasbourg. On top of that, its interior is tastefully decorated, and its breakfasts are yummy.

✨ Luxury Choice: Goodtime Apartments Strasbourg: Here, you will have access to all the amenities you could ever dream of, from a smart TV to fancy equipment. Right next to a large part of the Christmas Market, with a classy decoration.

💰 Budget Pick: Hôtel Patricia – Strasbourg Hyper Centre: Located in a charming, ancient building, this apartment is perfect for a cheap, ideally situated stay in Alsace’s capital.

Best Place to Stay in Strasbourg on a Budget: Meinau

meinau district in strasbourg

While the city center of Strasbourg is undeniably one of the cutest neighborhoods in France, not everyone can afford to stay there.

And, if you are traveling on a budget, I can only recommend picking a hotel that’s further away from the most buzzing parts of the city, and pick a more basic accommodation. That’s why I must recommend the Meinau quarter.

Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with this neighborhood, except that it is slightly away from the center of the action; but that doesn’t mean that you’ll have to wake up at dawn! In fact, a mere 4 to 8 tramway stations (or 8 to 15 minutes) stand between you and the cathedral.

Another great reason for you to pick it is how peaceful it is, with its green spaces.

Pros

Peaceful area

Best value for money

Easy access to the center

Green spaces

Cons

Nothing to do

Not particularly beautiful

Here’s my selection of the best accommodations in Meinau by travel style:

✅  Best Hotel: Appartement Le Männele: This accommodation is equipped with all the amenities you want for a comfortable stay, and is pretty spacious.

✨ Luxury Choice: Good Life à Strasbourg: With how cozy, nicely decorated, and luxurious it is, you are guaranteed a memorable holiday in Strasbourg. The staff is also very welcoming and caring.

💰 Budget Pick: ibis Styles Strasbourg Stade de la Meinau: Compared to other larger hotels, this one offers particularly spacious rooms, where you will feel comfortable for a low price. Awesome!

Best Neighborhood to Stay in Strasbourg for Families: Neudorf

neudorf quarter in strasbourg

Located south of the city center, the Neudorf quarter is the ideal neighborhood for families: as a matter of fact, it is already a family-friendly area, and most Strasbourgeois in their thirties picked it as their ideal home for themselves and their young children.

Not only is this neighborhood safe, relaxing, and residential, but it is also close to the city center, so you have access to the maximum number of options.

Your children will love the Neudorf quarter, because you will find not only a particularly large cinema in the heart of the city (which is pretty rare), but the portuary area around it is just so wonderful to relax in; also, there are tons of amenities for kids!

Pros

Large cinema

Residential and peaceful area

Family-friendly amenities

Cons

Not much to visit

Here’s my selection of the best accommodations in Neudorf by travel style:

✅  Best Hotel: Maison duplex, avec terrasse: In this accommodation, you will be in a particularly peaceful location, where everything is readily available in the vicinity.

✨ Luxury Choice: Médicis Home Strasbourg: The reason I love this hotel so much is that it is mostly a residence for seniors, meaning no one will ever bother you, and you and your children can feel safe.

💰 Budget Pick: Aloft Strasbourg Etoile: If you want to get the best of both worlds with an affordable yet perfectly located hotel, you should for sure pick this one, your family will thank you!

Where to Stay in Strasbourg for Nightlife: Krutenau

krutenau neighborhood in strasbourg

Last but not least is the Krutenau quarter, definitely the best neighborhood of Strasbourg when it comes to nightlife.

And despite the city not being famous for buzzing activities, you can still enjoy fun nights out if you decide to reside in this area.

The Krutenau quarter is the student neighborhood, and it is filled with fun bars, tasty restaurants, and entertaining nightclubs. Also, you will find the cheapest drinks in Strasbourg there, so you can go out and have all the fun you want!

On top of that, this quarter is also great during the day, because it is ideally located between the city center and the Neudorf neighborhood. Enjoy!

Pros

Student neighborhood

Cheap drinks

Great location

Cons

Can be dirty

Here’s my selection of the best accommodations in Krutenau by travel style:

✅ Best Hotel: Chambre d’hôtes La Célestine: With its authentic decoration, it is perfectly located for a quiet stay whilst offering easy access to the center. And the breakfast is nothing else than excellent!

✨ Luxury Choice: Les Toits d’Austerlitz: In this place, you will enjoy a comfy vibe and will also have peacefulness and breathtaking views of the cathedral.  Besides, this apartment is particularly spacious and decorated with taste. Amazing!

💰 Budget Pick: Krutenau Lifestyle: Situated in a very quiet street, it offers comfortable beds, which could have been a risk when renting a more affordable hotel.

What are the areas to avoid in Strasbourg?

If I were you, I wouldn’t stay around the train station, simply because it isn’t the most charming neighborhood in Strasbourg.

But the area I would avoid at all costs would be the Neuhof quarter, in the south of Strasbourg. There, you could feel unsafe, and there is honestly nothing to visit.

Final Thoughts

There you go, these were my 5 favorite areas to stay in Strasbourg. I hope you will adore the eastern city as much as I do, and that you found the neighborhood you wanted the most.

For those of you who still aren’t sure where you want to stay, I have to insist that Petite France is for sure the best neighborhood in Strasbourg, where you will find all the traditional houses and excellent restaurants.
