THE BEST Place to Stay in Sardinia: Alghero

alghero is the best place to stay in sardinia

No matter what you are looking for the most, Alghero has it, and I can tell you that it is the best town to stay in Sardinia. I believe that it is the best compromise you will find, so, if you want your stay in Italy to be most memorable, just consider the 5th-largest town on the island.

There are several reasons for me to believe so, don’t worry, I didn’t rush this decision. First off, it is easily reachable via one of the three airports of Sardinia. Then, there are several amazing beaches, which is probably what you love most about the island, but also great sights nearby such as the fantastic Neptune’s Cave. Lastly, the town itself is split into two: one more modern, new part and a more ancient, historic area.

Definitely an awesome blend of culture, history, beaches, accessibility, and magic!

Pros

Historic old town

Modern new town

Breathtaking beaches

Cons

Crowded beachfront

Where to Stay in Alghero

So, you want to stay in Alghero, which is a great choice, I’ve already said that; with all the interesting activities and breathtaking sights that await you there, I can’t blame you.

Nevertheless, if you want to make sure your stay there is memorable, you’ll need a good hotel. So, pick one of these three accommodations, and I can guarantee you’ll love your holiday:

✅ Best Hotel: Alma di Alghero Hotel

The experience you will enjoy at the Alma di Alghero Hotel is nothing but incredible. Also, you will get great value for your money, which is why this is easily the best hotel in the entire town.

On top of that, the outdoor area of the complex offers a large, lit-up swimming pool with magical views of the sunset and the sea. The interior has nothing to be ashamed of either, as it is bright, modern, and clean.

✨ Luxury Choice: Casa Villamarina

If you love the rolling hills and unending vineyards you can find in the iconic landscapes of Tuscany, in North Italy, you will adore the Casa Villamarina, which replicates this experience but in North Sardinia.

There, you will live in the middle of a vineyard, in particularly peaceful scenery, and no one will ever bother you. Also, you can taste excellent, local wines every day!

💰 Budget Pick: Lo Spicchio b&b

As for travelers on a tight budget, I think Lo Spicchio b&b should be a solid pick. Considering the many fantastic perks it offers, I still have a hard time believing how cheap it is.

Located merely 1 km / 0.6 mi from the closest beach, its rooms are spacious and it is fully equipped with anything you could need. Amazing!

Where to Stay in Sardinia for Beaches: Chia

chia is a best town to stay in sardinia

For those of you who don’t know, Chia is a small, lovely heaven located in the southernmost tip of Sardinia. Pretty close to Cagliari, the capital of the island, you can easily reach it via car or bus, and it is, according to me, the best place to stay in Sardinia when it comes to beaches.

Of course, the beachfront is otherworldly, and that’s mostly what you need to know, but there are other reasons for me to love Chia as much as I do. In this village, there are far fewer tourists than in the larger towns, which is enjoyable and pretty rare. Besides, you will find plenty of water sports and fun activities, all the while you will live in peaceful scenery, surrounded by nature and its greenery.

However, I must warn you that, if you are looking for buzzing nightlife, you won’t find any of that in Chia, and should rather head to a more active area of Sardinia.

Pros

Exceptional beachfront

Water sports

Fewer tourists

Cons

No real nightlife

Where to Stay in Chia

If you want to stay in Chia and enjoy its exceptional beachfront, you will need help narrowing down the best accommodations in the city.

Here, I have made it easy for you; these are my 3 favorite picks in the area, depending on your budget:

✅ Best Hotel: Casa vacanze Richi&Michi Chia

While it isn’t the most popular accommodation right now, this hotel will soon blow up, mark my words. That’s why I recommend booking it as fast as possible before it becomes too popular.

For a very low price, you will live in an amazing hotel, located in a remote and wild area. Don’t worry, the beaches are mere minutes away, so you won’t miss out on them.

✨ Luxury Choice: Faro Capo Spartivento

For those of you who want to take your next holiday in Sardinia to the next level, and want the most luxurious hotel right next to one of the best coastlines of the island, the Faro Capo Spartivento is right there.

Sat atop a rock, gazing at the horizon, this hotel boasts incredible scenery.

💰 Budget Pick: B&B I Colori di Chia

If, on the other hand, you are traveling to Chia on a tight budget, then my recommendation is the B&B I Colori di Chia, which offers the best value for money.

As its name suggests, it is indeed very colorful, but there’s more to it: it is located next to the beach and various restaurants, and offers lovely views of the quiet village.

Best Area to Stay in Sardinia for Nightlife: Olbia

olbia is the best place in sardinia

If it only depended on me, I would probably put Olbia as the best area to stay in all of Sardinia, but that would be a bit biased; I still think that, if we’re being objective, Alghero offers the best compromise on the island. However, I’m certain that, if what you are looking for is nightlife, you will be served in the cute town!

Olbia has gorgeous beaches with magical sunsets, making it a true haven. Also, the cute, narrow streets of Sardinia await you there, and there are tons of restaurants, nightclubs, and bars for a fun night out.

On top of that, the area is overall lovely and great for walking around and taking stunning photos. So, what more do I need to say in order to convince you that Olbia is the place to be?

Pros

Best nightlife amenities

Cute town

Stunning beaches

Cons

Quite touristic

Where to Stay in Olbia

Great! You agree with me that Olbia is superb, and would love to stay in the small town. Be careful though, the area is pretty coveted, and it can be difficult to find what you need.

In any case, I have listed here 3 of the best options, sorted by budget, so you should be right:

✅ Best Hotel: L’Essenza Hotel

Despite the humongous amount of accommodations you will find in Olbia, I don’t think any of them can rival L’Essenza Hotel, which already goes to show how incredible it is.

For a fair price, you will have access to a superb property, situated right in the middle of the town, which is perfect for nightlife purposes. Enjoy!

✨ Luxury Choice: Home Avenue Luxury Townhouse

When it comes to luxurious hotels in Olbia, my go-to is the Home Avenue Luxury Townhouse, mostly thanks to its clean design. Also, the rooms are modern equipped and pretty spacious.

Another fantastic perk is its incredible rooftop with a jacuzzi tub: from there, you will overlook all of Olbia!

💰 Budget Pick: Antica Isola

The Antica Isola is one of the cheapest hotels I have found throughout Sardinia, and yet it is perfectly located in a fantastic area, making it an easy choice for budget travelers.

Located in a quiet part of Olbia, this accommodation will greet you with its magnificent main hall, as well as its well-maintained flowery entrance.

Where to Stay in Sardinia for Honeymoon: Villasimius

villasimius counts in the best cities to stay in sardinia

If you have chosen Sardinia for an unforgettable honeymoon with your other half, you have already made the right decision: the island will give you both unforgettable memories.

However, if you want to make sure the stay is as fantastic and romantic as possible, then you should stay in Villasimius, a particularly lovely town situated near Cagliari.

The main reason I love Villasimius so much is definitely because of the large amount of activities you can do there, although I’m sure you will want to spend most of your time on the paradisiacal beachfront.

Aside from that, there are also tons of water activities you and your loved one could try, such as scuba diving or snorkeling, as well as ancient, unique archeological sites for you to discover.

Pros

Paradisiacal beaches

Archeological sites

Water activities

Cons

Lost its authenticity

Where to Stay in Villasimius

Although picking a hotel is always an important decision for a successful holiday, it is even more critical for a honeymoon. Don’t stress it: here are 3 fantastic options that will guarantee you and your special someone have lifelong memories.

✅ Best Hotel: Appartamenti Shardana

I am completely convinced that this is the best hotel you can find in all of Villasimius.

There, you will live in a fully equipped and modern interior with great style and comfortable beds. Plus, the outdoor area is very spacious and is ideal for relaxing purposes.

✨ Luxury Choice: Palazzo Michelangelo

If you want a comfortable and luxurious hotel for your honeymoon, you have come to the right place: the Palazzo Michelangelo offers just that!

Staying at this hotel will teach you the true definition of peacefulness. Its complex is both well-designed and spacious, its staff is responsive, the breakfasts it serves are exquisite and the swimming pools are magnificent.

💰 Budget Pick: Paraiso Sardo 1

The Paraiso Sardo 1 is a particularly inexpensive option in Villasimius that will suit any kind of couple.

For such low pricing, you will have access to tons of interesting perks, such as a lovely and cozy atmosphere, as well as authentic, local vibes. Also, the hosts will cook tasty Sardinian cuisine just for you!

Best Area in Sardinia to Stay for Families: Santa Teresa Gallura

santa teresa gallura is a best area to stay in sardinia

Traveling with your family is incredible, that’s for sure, but if you can’t find a safe and suitable place for all of you, then it can become a particularly nerve-wracking experience.

In my opinion, no place in Sardinia is better for that than Santa Teresa Gallura. There, you will enjoy the peaceful scenery, as you will be located in a quaint, isolated haven, which is very safe. With its cute, narrow streets and tasty restaurants, trust me, Santa Teresa Gallura will seduce you.

Although I think this destination suits any kind of family, it is best for those with kids under 10, because of how little activities there are besides chilling on the beach. If you’re into that though, you’re in for a treat! The beaches are nothing but amazing, and you could ride pedalos all day long, should you want to.

Pros

Laid-back atmosphere

Pedalos

Most peaceful

Cons

Not much to do

Where to Stay in Santa Teresa Gallura

As peaceful as Santa Teresa Gallura may be, it cannot offer a memorable family trip without suitable accommodation.

So, if you want to make sure your loved ones thank you for your decision, pick one of these three hotels, depending on your budget:

✅ Best Hotel: B&B Rosa dei Venti

Located right by the seaside, the B&B Rosa dei Venti is definitely the best hotel you can wish for in Santa Teresa Gallura.

In this accommodation, you will be served copious and varied breakfasts each morning, and the host will warmly welcome you in Sardinia. Also, the rooms are spotlessly clean, and the beds are of the utmost comfort.

✨ Luxury Choice: Villa Bianca Luxury B&B Experience

If you love breathtaking views from the comfort of your own hotel, then the Villa Bianca Luxury B&B Experience is for you.

Situated right next to a pristine sand beach, it offers unforgettable sights of the natural landscapes, as well as tasteful and modern decoration.

💰 Budget Pick: Da Adriana Guesthouse

If you want a comfortable yet decent hotel for you and your family, Da Adriana Guesthouse should be your go-to.

There, you will have access to a cute, sunny terrace, in an intimate and cozy guesthouse. Also, the breakfasts are fresh and local!

Best Place to Stay in Sardinia Without a Car: Cagliari

cagliari is one of the best places to stay in sardinia

Honestly, I could have easily picked Cagliari as my favorite place to stay in Sardinia. The capital of the island is versatile, and I’m sure anyone could find something to like about it.

It is definitely the best place to stay in Sardinia without a car though, as it is the main transportation hub of the whole island: this means that not only will you most likely arrive there first, but also that you can have prime access to all of Sardinia if you stay there. Trust me, you won’t miss having a car!

In Cagliari, you will find amazing beaches, all the facilities you could need, interesting activities and tasty cuisine. Besides, it is pretty easy to walk around, but you could also take a taxi or a bus. Overall, the town offers a pretty genuine experience that everyone should try.

Pros

Genuine experience

Relaxed atmosphere

Main transportation hub

Cons

Quite touristic

Where to Stay in Cagliari

Are you interested in staying in Cagliari? Then you have probably already realized by now that there are so many hotels that it can be truly annoying to find the one you were looking for.

To save you some trouble, I have narrowed down all of the options to my 3 favorite picks, sorted by budget:

✅ Best Hotel: Quarzo. Modern Rooms

When it comes to the best hotels, it’s all about compromise. And, in Cagliari, it turns out that the best compromise you can find is the Quarzo. Modern Rooms which offer a well-rounded experience.

In this accommodation, the interior is finely decorated in whitewashed fashion, and the amenities are comfortable. Plus, the host will warmly welcome you, and the location, in the heart of the town, is just perfect.

✨ Luxury Choice: Palazzo Doglio

If you want to guarantee your stay in Cagliari is a success, then you should pick the Palazzo Doglio, an incredible, fancy accommodation.

Not only is this the best luxury hotel in the capital, but also one of my favorites on the island. Its rooms are both spacious and fully equipped, while its restaurant is of gastronomic standard.

💰 Budget Pick: Mercury Rooms

Although it can be a struggle to find an affordable hotel in such a bustling town as Cagliari, I think the Mercury Rooms are superb.

There, you will stay in a bright and clean room and will enjoy your own sunny balcony, where you can relax all day long. Besides, the center of the capital is within reach, and there are plenty of parking spots in the vicinity.

Where to Stay in Sardinia for Hiking: Orosei

orosei is among the best places in sardinia to stay

I just know that, while most travelers are seeking a peaceful time by the beachfront, loads of others are traveling to Sardinia for a memorable experience in the wilderness. And, if you’re one of those people, then you definitely want to stay in Orosei, easily the best area for hiking on the island.

The reason I’m saying this is because, from Orosei, you will have access to tons of different hiking options, and everyone will find something they like. Located a bit more than an hour away from Olbia, it is the quaint retreat you’ve always dreamt of.

As for Orosei itself, it is a small, picturesque town with a stunning bay. Aside from more classic hikes, it also boasts grottos, coves, and, of course, beaches. The most famous of them in the area is the UNESCO-listed cove of Cala Goloritzé, accessible after about 1 hour walking.

So, if you want to reconnect with nature during your trip to Sardinia, check out Orosei!

Pros

Plenty of hiking options

Incredible bay

Coves and grottos

Cons

Difficult to reach without a car

Not much activity

Where to Stay in Orosei

Wandering into nature is one of the most relaxing experiences you could enjoy, that’s for sure. Nevertheless, you’ll still need a hotel for that. If you are looking to stay in Orosei, pick one of these 3 options, I can tell you they’re amazing:

✅ Best Hotel: Domo Pro Vois

If you just want the best option you can find in Orosei, look no further: the Domo Pro Vois has it all.

Boasting pretty low prices, this accommodation is the ideal compromise, as it is perfectly located in the heart of the town, and has an amazing interior with stone walls and modern furniture.

✨ Luxury Choice: Residenze Branca II SeaView

For those of you who are going to spend most of your days hiking and want to come back to the most comfortable hotel, I give you the Residenze Branca II SeaView.

As their name implies, these apartments offer incredible views of the sea. That’s not all though, as the interior is bright, clean, and modern, and the garden is ideal for chilling.

💰 Budget Pick: Su Pinnetu

You won’t find any cheaper or more original accommodation than the Su Pinnetu, where you will stay inside a cozy trailer.

There, you will enjoy maximum peacefulness, and won’t lack anything in your tiny home.

Where to Stay in Sardinia for Local Vibe: Sant’Antioco

sant antioco is a best city to stay in sardinia

For some travelers, having an authentic trip where they get to experience what it feels like to live in their destination is a priority.

I completely get that, and I feel like lots of places have lost their authenticity, generally speaking, and that we tend to neglect the lives of locals. So, if you want to connect with them and live like a Sardinian, you should stay in Sant’Antioco.

Sant’Antioco is both an island and a town located in southwestern Sardinia. Realistically, you could stay anywhere on the small island, but the most convenient area is the eponym town. There, you will see colorful buildings with a unique marine atmosphere and can discover more about Sardinia’s history.

You’ve guessed it though, what’s best about it is that there are fewer tourists and that the vibe feels more genuine.

Pros

Laid-back atmosphere

Colorful buildings

Fewer tourists

Cons

Kind of need a car

Where to Stay in Sant’Antioco

So, you are looking to experience an authentic holiday in Sardinia, that’s fantastic. In order to make sure your stay is a success, I recommend you book one of these three accommodations:

✅ Best Hotel: Il Sentiero B&Bìo

In Il Sentiero B&Bìo, you will be warmly welcomed by a nice host, who will help you with recommendations about visits and restaurants in the surroundings.

On top of that, your stay will be particularly quiet, and the breakfast will be particularly tasty. What more do you need?

✨ Luxury Choice: Residence Isola dei Mori

Located in a perfect area, the Residence Isola dei Mori is the go-to luxury choice in Sant’Antioco.

The reason I’m saying this is because it has its own well-maintained, lush garden, is extremely spacious (and thus, ideal for families), and has views of the sea. Amazing!

💰 Budget Pick: Hotel Solki

The Hotel Solki is one of the cheapest accommodations you can find not only in Sant’Antioco but also throughout the rest of southern Sardinia.

Rooms are impeccably clean, the staff is skillful and responsive, breakfasts are copious and beds are comfortable.

Best Location to Stay in Sardinia on A Budget: Sassari

Even though it is a pretty large town, Sassari isn’t often mentioned as a tourist destination. However, it is clearly the best place to stay if you’re traveling on a budget.

Don’t get me wrong though, all of Sardinia is fairly expensive, but Sassari is your best bet for saving up pennies.

Nevertheless, I want to help budget travelers here by giving them precious pieces of advice: if you are looking to save as much money as possible, make sure you plan your trip in advance, try to travel off-season, and go to places with fewer tourists; basically, Sassari!

Not too popular among tourists, the second-largest town of the island still boasts unique festivals with ancient celebrations, as well as historic, beautiful architecture.

Pros

Ancient festivals

Beautiful architecture

Cons

Can be annoying to reach

Where to Stay in Sassari

Yes, I’m aware that you will stay in a budget-friendly place, and are looking to save money.

Still, I have listed three picks based on budget, for those of you who want to invest a bit more into your accommodation:

✅ Best Hotel: L’Accademia dei Sogni

Don’t want to waste time and would love to find the best compromise in Sassari? Then here it is: L’Accademia dei Sogni is all you’ve ever dreamt of.

Not only does this hotel offer great value for your money, but it also features a particularly comfortable and tastefully decorated interior, as well as a pristine location in the heart of the town.

✨ Luxury Choice: Locanda Carra Manna

Are you staying in a cheaper area just so you can pick a fancier hotel? I completely get you! And if you want to do that, pick the Locanda Carra Manna.

This hotel is just exceptional: it offers comfortable beds, kind and caring staff, a central location, impeccable cleanliness, stylish decoration, and exquisite breakfasts.

💰 Budget Pick: B&B La Perla Bianca

Although North Sardinia is pretty expensive, this is the cheapest stay you could find: the B&B La Perla Bianca, my budget pick in Sassari.

For such an incredibly low price, it still offers awesome perks. You will enjoy fresh and varied breakfasts and will be nicely located. Besides, there are free parking spots, as well as a sunny terrace!

Best Area Where to Stay in Sardinia for Culture: Pula

pula is one of sardinia best places to stay

There are plenty of interesting towns in Sardinia when it comes to culture, and although Cagliari, the capital of the island, is very good for that (and I can easily recommend it to anyone), I wanted to highlight Pula, a unique place that travelers should know more about, in my opinion.

This quaint, seaside village is situated in southern Sardinia, pretty close to Cagliari. Although I’m sure you will love its dreamy bay and the tree-lined streets, if you’re going to Sardinia for culture, you should definitely check out the myriad of ancient ruins scattered across and around the village.

Don’t worry though, you can also enjoy paradisiacal beaches, active nightlife, and exceptional seafood. So, if you want to learn more about the history of Sardinia while having fun in the evenings, Pula is your go-to!

Pros

Exceptional seafood

Loads of ancient architecture

Breathtaking bay

Cons

A bit expensive

Where to Stay in Pula

Pula is sometimes known as the prettiest town in southern Sardinia, so I can completely understand why you want to stay there.

If that’s your case, check out these three places:

✅ Best Hotel: Sa Ramadura

Want to make sure your stay in Pula is most memorable? Then Sa Ramadura should be your pick.

This incredible hotel is managed by fantastic hosts, who will warmly welcome you to their property. Around it, there are tons of tasty and cute restaurants, and the beach is a mere 5 minutes away by car.

✨ Luxury Choice: MEM Lodge and Suite

Staying at the MEM Lodge and Suite is synonymous with comfort, space to breathe, and quality of equipment.

This luxury hotel has it all, from a modern bathroom to a splendid location, near plenty of incredible beaches. Just stunning!

💰 Budget Pick: Affittacamere Villa Francesca

Not only are the Affittacamere Villa Francesca cheap apartments, but they are also an overall well-rounded pick for a nice stay in Pula.

Offering a beautiful garden, this accommodation is located near the center of the town. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the area is peaceful.

Best Place to Stay in North Sardinia: Costa Smeralda

costa smeralda is a best place to holiday in sardinia

I know, Costa Smeralda isn’t very specific, but the entirety of this area is just incredible, and I couldn’t pick a town there. If you are heading to North Sardinia, you should stay anywhere on Costa Smeralda in towns like Porto Cervo for example.

Ideal for couples but suitable for any kind of traveler, Costa Smeralda has buzzing activities all year round, and you will never get bored if you stay there, no matter what your interests are.

Besides, it is for you if you are looking to sunbathe on the warm sand of Sardinia and relax by the gorgeous seaside: the beaches there are some of the best in Sardinia and the entire Mediterranean. Also, the restaurants there are of the highest standards.

Let me warn you of something though: because it is so crowded during the summer, you should definitely travel to Costa Smeralda off-season.

Pros

Buzzing activity

Marvelous beaches

Excellent restaurants

Cons

Pretty expensive

Very crowded in the summer

Where to Stay in Costa Smeralda

Because of how large Costa Smeralda is, you could run into trouble when it comes to picking the best accommodation.

For you, I have narrowed down the options to three picks, tell me what you think:

✅ Best Hotel: La Smeralda – Boutique Rooms and Breakfast

La Smeralda – Boutique Rooms and Breakfast is easily the best hotel you can find across Costa Smeralda, mostly thanks to its excellent location and stylish interior design.

On top of that, the staff is caring and nice, the breakfast is homemade with fresh and local products and the cleanliness is spotless. Enjoy your stay!

✨ Luxury Choice: Borgo Alba Barona Turismo Rurale

For those of you who are looking for a luxurious and comfortable holiday in one of the most fantastic areas of the Mediterranean, I give you the Borgo Alba Barona Turismo Rurale.

Perfect for travelers seeking peaceful times, this hotel is situated right in the middle of the countryside but still offers stunning views of the seaside. It is thus ideal for intimacy and relaxing times.

💰 Budget Pick: La Finestra Vista Corsica

As its name suggests, La Finestra Vista Corsica offers views of… Corsica! Because yes, for those of you who didn’t know, both islands aren’t too far from one another.

If you decide to stay there, you will enjoy a budget-friendly yet comfortable hotel, where you will have easy access to all of the main points of interest of Santa Teresa, a lovely town.

Best Place to Stay in South Sardinia: Costa Rei

costa rei is among the top places where to stay on sardinia

While the northern half of Sardinia is usually the most coveted part of the island, I believe the South is also worth checking out, as there are fantastic beaches, incredible archeological sites, and, as usual, excellent food. And, if you are interested in South Sardinia, then you should definitely stay in Costa Rei.

There, you will enjoy some of the best beaches of the entire island, which is perfect if you are just looking to relax, or are traveling with your family. There are still plenty of other activities, such as hiking trails and water sports, making this another prime destination for outdoor activities, which I’m sure loads of travelers are looking forward to.

On top of all of that, the town is safe and beautiful, and I’m sure you will have a great time there, no matter what kind of group you are traveling with.

Pros

Safe town

Outdoor activities

Peaceful place

Cons

Mostly for nature

Where to Stay in Costa Rei

For those of you who want to stay in Costa Rei, you’ll love learning that there are plenty of hotels, suitable for every kind of budget or needs.

In my opinion though, three of them stand out above the rest, so have a look:

✅ Best Hotel: Hotel Ristorante Il Vascello

Do you just want the best overall hotel in Costa Rei? Don’t waste any more energy: the Hotel Ristorante Il Vascello is right there for you; you should book it while you can!

With a particularly beautiful and wide swimming pool, this incredible accommodation boasts comfortable and spacious rooms, whilst remaining both cozy and small, for the most memorable times in Sardinia.

✨ Luxury Choice: Villa del Moro, FREE WIFI, 300mt from Sinzias’ Beach

If you decide to book the Villa del Moro, FREE WIFI, 300mt from Sinzias’ Beach, I can guarantee you will be pleased; it is easily the best luxury hotel in Costa Rei!

The reasons I’m saying this are, first off, that it is a whole villa, where you will feel on your own and particularly comfortable; besides, the interior is both fully equipped and pretty spacious.

💰 Budget Pick: Casa teresa

Are you looking for a budget-friendly hotel in Costa Rei? In my opinion, the best compromise is this hotel.

In this hotel, you will have absolutely amazing views of the beachfront, which is just where you will be situated. So, if you are looking forward to sunbathing by the sea, this is your go-to!

Best Place to Stay in La Maddalena: La Maddalena (town)

la maddalena is a best place to stay on sardinia

La Maddalena is an archipelago located in the northernmost part of Sardinia. And, although most people talk about Alghero for its fantastic beaches, I think La Maddalena has an even better seaside.

The archipelago is both breathtaking and unspoiled, and its wilderness is superb. Believe me when I say this, if you decide to stay on La Maddalena, you will never get bored of its turquoise waters, jaw-dropping views, and wild hikes.

I believe that the best place to stay in La Maddalena is… La Maddalena! Obviously, I’m talking about the eponym town, which is the main one on the archipelago. While all of the islands are magnificent, I think it’s just easier and more convenient to stay in the main town.

Also, the archipelago is a natural reserve, and its marine ecosystem is untouched. The vegetation is lush and verdant, and the landscapes are otherworldly. For an absolute immersion in wildness, I recommend Cala Napoletana which is my fav beach on La Maddalena.

Pros

Natural reserve

Exceptional landscapes

Boat rides

Quiet area

Cons

Only for off-season

Where to Stay in La Maddalena

Although the archipelago of La Maddalena is largely unspoiled, it still boasts tons of decent hotels.

And, if you want to make sure you took the right decision, here are three of them you simply cannot go wrong with:

✅ Best Hotel: Excelsior

Although there are plenty of accommodations in La Maddalena, I am 100% convinced this is definitely the best hotel in the town. Its interior is clean, its rooms are spacious and its architecture is just superb.

Plus, you will be located in the center of the harbor of the main town of the archipelago, which gives you easy access to all the ferries and boats.

✨ Luxury Choice: Hotel Cala Lunga

If you want to make sure your stay in the natural reserve of La Maddalena is most comfortable and memorable, check out the Hotel Cala Lunga.

Located right by the seaside, this hotel offers a private portion of the beach fully equipped with all you need, as well as modern amenities and beautiful swimming pools. Fantastic!

💰 Budget Pick: Hotel Villa Marina

For those of you who are traveling on a tight budget, you will be pretty satisfied with the Hotel Villa Marina. Situated right next to the center of La Maddalena, it serves tasty breakfasts each morning and offers tons of parking spots.

On top of that, the staff there will quickly answer your every need, and they are both nice and smiling.

Places to Avoid in Sardinia

Overall, Sardinia is a safe destination. There is very little violence or assault, so you can explore the island without worry. However, as everywhere else in the world, don’t leave valuables out of sight, and always be cautious.

Now from a purely tourist perspective, some places are less interesting. These include the industrial areas of Portoscuso and Porto Torres, which are far less charming than the rest of the island.

The inland regions are also less attractive than the coastlines, although there are a few hidden gems such as the Nuraghic site of Su Nuraxi that are worth visiting. But if you don’t have much time in Sardinia and/or if you don’t have a car, I’d recommend skipping the central regions.

For travelers on a budget, it’s best to avoid the Costa Smeralda in the northeast. All the international elite gather in this corner of paradise, and prices soar. But discovering the marvels of the Costa Smeralda without breaking (too much) the bank is possible. During our road trip, we stayed 1 night in Olbia and another

You will, however, be able to find slightly more affordable prices in Olbia, which is a good base for discovering the Costa Smeralda without breaking (too much) the bank.

Where to Stay in Sardinia: North or South?

I don’t believe there is an objective better place to stay in Sardinia, and it depends on your needs.

North Sardinia is perfect for fancy travelers who are looking for a glamorous holiday. It boasts large resorts, more luxurious hotels, as well as the best nightlife spots.

South Sardinia is quieter and wilder, but it still has unique archeological sites and family-friendly, wide beaches.

Final Thoughts

Well, there you go! We are now done with the best places in Sardinia to stay; so, I hope you loved learning more about them and that you found the place you needed the most.

Just for those of you who are still hesitating, let me remind you once more how incredible Alghero is, and why it is the best city to stay in Sardinia according to me: with its amazing beaches and the best of both worlds (with a modern new town and a historic old town), you just can’t go wrong with it.
