The Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Naxos – Pros & Cons
Naxos is one of the many wonderful islands Greece has to offer; however, not all neighborhoods will fit your needs, whether you are traveling on a budget or want to enjoy your trip with comfortable accommodations. Besides, everyone is unique and will want to do different things, from hiking and visiting monuments to simply resting in the sun and enjoying some quality time. However, this is not always easy to do when you don’t have access to a car, especially on such a wild island as Naxos.
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered: let’s dive into the list of the best neighborhoods of Naxos without a car!
THE BEST place to stay in Naxos without a car: Naxos Chora
Naxos Chora is the capital of the island of Naxos. It is located on a rocky peninsula, on the seaside, and its old town is absolutely stunning, both for its view of the sea and for its small, typical streets.
The Apollo Temple, the archeological museum, and the port are all worth a sight, and they are all within or near Naxos Chora. The temple is almost entirely destroyed, but it is a great place from which you can see the old town and offers a picturesque landscape. The archeological museum exhibits many items from Ancient Greece. Finally, the port is simply a sunny and relaxing place in which you will find many bars and restaurants.
However, what most people come for in Naxos Chora is definitely the wonderful sandy beach, and you can also just bathe in the sun, only a few minutes away from the center.
Entirely walkable
Plenty of activities
Full of convenience
Bustling area
Many tourists
Very busy place
Where to Stay in Naxos Chora
If you had to pick only one place to stay in Naxos without a car, Naxos Chora should definitely be your choice. It is a relatively small village with everything within walking range, is filled with everything you need and has many amazing places you should visit. Besides, even if you want to explore the island on foot or by bus, you should of course base your trip in the capital.
However, because of all the activity and people, it can be very difficult to pick the best Naxos hotel depending on your needs. But don’t worry, there are plenty of great choices and they are all well-located considering the small size of the village; I’ve got you covered:
✅ Best Hotel: Galaxy Hotel
According to me, this hotel is the best one Naxos has to offer. You couldn’t dream of a better place to stay on the whole island, even if you wanted to!
Located right between the center of Naxos Chora and the stunning Agio Georgios Beach, you’ll easily enjoy the seaside as much as you’ll enjoy the picturesque old town. Besides, the hotel itself is of course also amazing. Chilling by the swimming pool or in the garden here is a truly relaxing experience I can recommend to anyone!
✨ Luxury Choice: Majestique of Naxos boutique hotel
Majestique of Naxos boutique hotel is definitely the best pick if you want your trip to be most comfortable. It is located only 6 minutes away from the beach but also has an outdoor swimming pool as well as a jacuzzi.
This hotel only recently opened and is already meeting an overwhelming success, so make sure you book your stay before it’s full!

💰 Budget Pick: Lefkes Studios
When you are traveling on a budget, it is not always easy to find a decent hotel in a good location; in Naxos though, you are very lucky, as Lefkes Studios is very affordable and ideally located, only 1 minute away from the beach!
This accommodation is filled with everything you need: it has a kitchen, a television, and a great balcony, and you can enjoy coffee and snacks from a neighboring café.
Runner up Area in Naxos without a car: Agios Prokopios
Agios Prokopios is a small seaside village located about 5 km / 3.1 mi away from the capital, Naxos Chora. However, because of this, it is much cheaper than other areas and is also home to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is also a fantastic place to stay if you don’t have a car, being much more peaceful but still offering lots of possibilities.
Whether you enjoy evening seaside walks, sunbathing on the beach, or trying a traditional Greek dinner, Agios Prokopios is another fantastic place for you if you don’t have access to a car. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your trip though!
Although you are located a bit far from Naxos Chora and many of the monuments you might want to visit (and there are still lots of things to discover in Agios Prokopios, trust me), the village is connected by frequent bus lines, while taxis are much more expensive. However, this means you cannot come back to the hotel very late at night, so be careful about that!
Connected by bus lines
Not too far from Naxos Chora
Quieter area
Cheaper place
Away from the capital
Have to rely on buses
Where to Stay in Agios Prokopios
Sure, Agios Prokopios is cheaper than Naxos Chora and much of the rest of the island, but it doesn’t mean that it only has cheap options. In fact, there are plenty of accommodations for you to choose from, and if you stay in a more affordable area, you might want to compensate by paying for a better hotel than the one you could’ve rented in the capital.
In any case, no matter your situation, here are my personal top picks:
✅ Best Hotel: Anna Studios
Struggling to pick an option in Agios Prokopios? Just go for Anna Studios, trust me, you can’t go wrong with this one!
This hotel is situated only 2 minutes away from the beach. It is handled by a family and is located in a calm area. Don’t worry about your breakfast, as it will be provided every day, while you can pick from a broad range of restaurants in the vicinity for lunch and dinner.
✨ Luxury Choice: KYMA Apartments – Naxos Agios Prokopios
There are not many better ways of making your trip to Agios Prokopios the most memorable and comfortable possible than with the KYMA Apartments.
This stunning accommodation is literally on the seaside, in a very calm area. Besides, the hotel is fully equipped with everything you need, there are shuttles to the airport, and it is overall the perfect, calm retreat for you in Naxos.
💰 Budget Pick: Colosseo Star
Although Agios Prokopios is arguably the cheapest area on the island of Naxos, it does not mean that your comfort will be sacrificed: just pick Colosseo Star for instance!
This hotel is very close to the beach and is located near plenty of cafés, restaurants, and shops. You will also love the free transportation to the port (about 3 km / 1.8 mi away) or the airport (1.5 km / 0.9 mi away).
Is a car needed in Naxos?
By now, you most likely know the answer to this question, but let me still tell you: you can definitely enjoy your trip to Naxos without a car, you just need a bit of organization.
If you need to travel a bit too far for your feet to handle, there are several ways for you to explore the island: taxis, rental bikes, or buses. All of these are completely valid, and while some of them are more expensive, they are all well-developed in Naxos and are great means of moving around. For instance, the fantastic Plaka Beach (a must-visit on the island) is located less than 10 minutes away from Naxos Chora if you use one of the bus lines!
However, should you wish to do so, there are many car rental options on the island, as long as you meet the requirements for renting a car in Greece. But I guess that’s not why you’re here, am I right?
Is it easy to get around Naxos without a car?
Yes, getting around Naxos without a car is easy! As I said, there are multitudes of possibilities in order to travel around Naxos, and they are all valid.
Bus lines are your cheapest option, but the main cities are frequently connected, and you can easily go from one of them to another in a heartbeat. If you want to explore the wilderness of the island, you should definitely go for rental bikes, your medium choice in terms of budget.
Finally, taxis are also a great option if you favor comfort and have enough budget, as they will bring you anywhere you want in the quickest possible fashion.
Does Naxos have taxis?
Well yes, there are definitely taxis on Naxos. They are a very good means of getting around the island and can bring you almost anywhere. However, taxis have multitudes of flaws I need to warn you about.
First of all, they are very expensive and are by far the least affordable traveling option in Naxos. Then, you will need to be in specific locations of Naxos to find a taxi, most of which are located in the center of Naxos Chora. Finally, buses and bikes are more eco-friendly options that you could consider.
Final Thoughts
So there you have them, these were all of my top picks for where to stay for your next trips to Naxos without a car! I hope you loved this list, and most importantly that you found your perfect fit!
If you are still having any doubt about where to stay in Naxos without a car, just go to the capital village, Naxos Chora. It is a bustling area with lots of activities and fantastic monuments to visit, as well as a pristine sand beach, typical Greek homes, and streets, and a unique 13th-century Venetian castle, from which it will be ideal to base all of your activities and explorations!
