Where is the Centre of Lisbon?
Baixa, also known as the Baixa Pombalina, is the neighborhood located in the very center of Lisbon. There you’ll find lots of shops and plenty of activities to do. This reknown district is literally in the middle of downtown, in the historic center of Lisbon. It’s really convenient since you can access easily the metro lines A and C from Baixa-Chiado station.
Moreover, this neighborhood houses the capital’s most emblematic squares and streets. In fact, it starts in Restauradores Square (Praça dos Restauradores), continues to Avenida da Liberdade, Praça Marquês de Pombal and from this point forward is considered “Modern Lisbon”. It has large classical avenues with lots of houses with the typical Lisbon style.
This elegant district has not always been so magnificent: on the 11th November 1755, one of the world’s strongest recorded earthquakes devastated the district and, along with the massive tsunami, killed thousands of people. Now, the city is one of the first examples of earthquake-resistant construction.
Why You Should Stay in Lisbon City Centre
Baixa is the best area to stay in Lisbon city Centre. Especially if it’s your first time in Lisbon and you want to be close to all the main sights. This area is the one that welcomes the most tourists each year. Indeed, this is the perfect spot designed for tourism, with a vast selection of restaurants, bars, shops and small cafes with a charming atmosphere. This is also close to Praia da Ribeira das Naus, the only beach in Lisbon and many of Lisbon’s main tourist attractions.
From Baixa-Chiado station, you can enjoy for example the monumental National Theater, Praça do Comércio – the former royal square -, Lisbon Story Centre – an interactive museum about Lisbon’s history -, Rossio square, Saint George’s Castle or just go down the pedestrian Rua Augusta and arrive in the beautiful Comercio Square. In this area, you’ll be free to choose between a ferry cruise on the river or to book a tour and visit Cristo Rei statue.
On another hand, this area is also within walking distance of the bars and the nightlife of Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré districts, but far enough from it so you’ll not be annoyed by the noise.
To sum up, Baixa is definitely a great place to stay, because it’s within walking distance of major attractions, with excellent transport connections and close to all the commodities.
