But as a big city, I understand it can be a bit scary for tourists. So, to make sure everything goes well on your Paris trip, I’ve listed 10 safe areas to stay in Paris, where you’ll feel secure, day or night.
Let’s go!
No Time to Waste? Here’s my #1 Favorite!
- Laid-back atmosphere
- Authentic Parisian lifestyle
- Cultural hub
The Safest Areas to Stay in Paris – Pros & Cons
As incredible of a destination as Paris can be, it has a pretty bad reputation when it comes to pickpocketing and overall safety issues.
Although I personally don’t feel like the capital is worse than other large cities, here’s my personal list of the safest neighborhoods, where nothing will happen to you.
You’ll have the pros & cons of each of these areas along with a selection of best-rated hotels to help you.
1. The 6th Arrondissement, the Safest Area to Stay in Paris
If safety is your only concern for your next trip to Paris and you want to make sure you always feel at ease, then the 6th arrondissement is for you.
Although it is one of the pricier parts of the French capital and that it can be a bit noisy sometimes, it is for sure the best when it comes to safety.
The reason I’m saying this is because the 6th arrondissement is known to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the city, where it is pleasant to go out in cafés and restaurants, as well as relax in the laid-back atmosphere. Saint-Germain-des-Près is the arrondissement’s most characteristic district.
Another fantastic reason to pick the 6th arrondissement for your next holiday is that it best represents the genuine Parisian lifestyle, and you will feel like a local if you decide to stay there.
Laid-back atmosphere
Authentic Parisian lifestyle
Cultural hub
Tons of cafés & restaurants
Pretty noisy
Where to Stay in the 6th arrondissement
Staying in the 6th arrondissement is synonymous with safety, but that doesn’t mean that picking a hotel isn’t an important decision. For you, I have listed my 3 favorite options, depending on your budget:
✅ Best Hotel: Hotel Luxembourg Parc
Believe it or not, for such fantastic services and overall high standard, this 4-star hotel is quite affordable, making it an easy pick for me: it’s definitely the best hotel in the 6th arrondissement!
What I love most about it is its incredible and unique decoration, which feels like it’s from another century.
✨ Luxury Choice: Hôtel D’Aubusson
This absolutely immaculate accommodation has it all, from an amazing indoor heated swimming pool to a particularly professional staff. The definition of fanciness!
💰 Budget Pick: Hôtel Edouard 6 by Malone
Finding affordable accommodation in the 6th arrondissement is no easy feat, but the Hôtel Edouard 6 by Malone is exactly that. Don’t worry, you won’t have to sacrifice your comfort to prioritize your budget, as its rooms are comfortable, clean, and bright.
2. Le Marais
Particularly beloved by the Parisians, Le Marais is also one of the capital’s most famed neighborhoods, which is why you might have already heard of it.
Perfect for those of you who are looking for a peaceful (and, of course, safe!) time, it gives off genuine Parisian vibes and has cultural discoveries and beautiful strolls to offer. Whether you’re traveling on your own or as a group, the Marais is a fantastic area.
In this neighborhood, which is part of the 4th arrondissement, you will be surrounded by ancient and majestic monuments such as the city hall (l’Hôtel de Ville) all the while you can enjoy a laid-back atmosphere. There are tasty restaurants and cute shops.
Besides, it is a wonderful place for culture lovers: with the house of Victor Hugo, the famous Centre George Pompidou, or the Picasso Museum, you are in for a treat!
Cute streets
Peaceful neighborhood
Great for culture
Pretty noisy
Where to Stay in Le Marais
Do you think Le Marais is suitable for a safe trip to Paris? Well, I can tell you it is! But if you want to enjoy a nice holiday, you could pick one of these options:
✅ Best Hotel: Hôtel Le Presbytère
If you decide to stay in the Hôtel Le Presbytère, you will be blessed with a clean, bright, and modern interior. Besides, the staff there is both smiling and caring, and they will make sure all of your demands are met. Awesome!
✨ Luxury Choice: Goralska Résidences Hôtel Paris Bastille
Want to treat yourself to a luxurious hotel in Le Marais? My personal pick is the Goralska Résidences Hôtel Paris Bastille. Here, not only will you enjoy breathtaking views of the city, but the breakfasts there are exquisite, and the rooms are both spacious and stylishly decorated.
💰 Budget Pick: PARIS RIVOLI NOTRE DAME Chambre d’Hôtes Studio Private
Just because Le Marais as a whole is pretty pricey, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have more affordable options when it comes to accommodations. In this hotel, the bathroom and the rooms are both modern and spotlessly clean, and the beds are particularly comfortable.
3. 15th arrondissement
Believe it or not, the 15th arrondissement of Paris is one of the few neighborhoods of the capital that isn’t famous for a specific monument. Don’t worry though, it is still located right next to the 7th arrondissement and the Eiffel Tower, among others.
The fact that it is more of a residential area is also exactly what makes it so great for a holiday in Paris. It is particularly safe and nice to stay there, as it offers a peaceful atmosphere without being too far from the city center.
On top of that, it boasts one of the largest amounts of green spaces out of any arrondissement, which is always welcomed in a bustling capital.
Plus, several interesting museums await you in the 15th arrondissement. Overall, you will feel more like a local rather than a tourist if you decide to stay there.
Tons of green spaces
Several museums
No famous landmark
Where to Stay in the 15th arrondissement
Want to stay in the 15th arrondissement? Great pick for a safe trip. My personal advice is to choose one of these accommodations if you want to guarantee all runs well:
✅ Best Hotel: Hotel Eiffel Blomet
Have you ever dreamt of staying in a beautiful hotel in Paris, with a jacuzzi or a swimming pool, without having to spend too much for it? Well, have a look at the Hotel Eiffel Blomet, and you’ll quickly realize your dreams can come true.
Aside from the heated swimming pool of the hotel, its rooms are spacious and comfy. Awesome!
✨ Luxury Choice: Le Parisis – Paris Tour Eiffel
Just in case you don’t believe me when I say the Eiffel Tower is right next to the 15th arrondissement, have a look at Le Parisis – Paris Tour Eiffel: this hotel boasts incredible views of the Iron Lady, which is perfect for a classy holiday.
That’s not all there is to it, of course, as it offers top-notch services and cutting-edge equipment.
💰 Budget Pick: Cactus
Cactus is a pretty chill accommodation, and it is my recommendation for an affordable stay in the 15th arrondissement. Calm and with a lovely location, it has a spotlessly clean interior. The best thing about it though, on top of its fantastic value for money, is how comfortable the beds are.
4. 7th arrondissement
Why stay near the Eiffel Tower if you could also stay in the same arrondissement? That’s right, the Iron Lady is located in the 7th arrondissement, and this area is also pretty safe and nice for a holiday.
This is definitely my favorite arrondissement for families, because of how peaceful the atmosphere is (which is perfect for a stay with younger ones), but it can fit any kind of traveler, realistically.
Be wary that there are slightly fewer interesting activities in this arrondissement compared to others, but it is still centrally located and boasts several lovely green spaces, cute shops, and excellent restaurants.
Quietest neighborhood
Excellent restaurants
Nice green spaces
Less activities
Where to Stay in the 7th arrondissement
Deciding to stay in the 7th arrondissement for a safe holiday is pretty easy and senseful, but the hard part is picking suitable accommodation. If you want to avoid wasting time and energy, you can go with one of these:
✅ Best Hotel: Hotel Muguet
The Hotel Muguet offers a great compromise: for a pretty affordable price, you will have access to a comfortable room furnished with modern amenities, all of which are situated in a lovely building.
✨ Luxury Choice: 1,75 Paris La Sève
What would a stay in Paris look like without the well-known style of French classiness? Agree? Then check out the 1,75 Paris La Sève, a fancy and luxurious accommodation.
There, you will live in a particularly magical and cozy atmosphere, as well as refined decoration and modern equipment.
💰 Budget Pick: Hotel de L’Empereur by Malone
Don’t be scared by its name, the Hotel de L’Empereur by Malone isn’t only meant for Napoleon! Actually, it is one of the more affordable options of the 7th arrondissement and, in my opinion, the best of them.
The decoration of this hotel is the same as that of the French Empire, which is already lovely, but its best perk is definitely its beautiful views of the Hôtel des Invalides!
5. Quartier Latin (Latin quarter)
Situated within the 5th arrondissement, the Quartier Latin is one of Paris’ oldest neighborhoods and is home to some of the best monuments and museums of the capital, such as the Pantheon or the Museum of Natural History.
With so many fantastic cultural institutions, no wonder it is a wonderful area to stay; of course, it’s also safe!
That’s not all you will find in the Latin quarter though, as it is also very charming, thanks to its lush gardens and ancient architectural style. Actually, even according to the Parisians, it is one of the (if not the) best areas of the whole capital.
Unfortunately, this comes at a price, otherwise, the Quartier Latin would have been my easy #1 pick: it is particularly expensive to stay there, which can deter a lot of people I’m afraid.
Museums and monuments
Old neighborhood
Best neighborhood according to locals
Large gardens
Very expensive
Where to Stay in the Quartier Latin (Latin quarter)
The moody reputation of Parisians will feel like it was all fake if you stay in the Quartier Latin, considering how nice and sympathetic its inhabitants are known to be. So, if I convinced you to stay there, go for one of these hotels:
✅ Best Hotel: Hôtel Pilgrim
If you want to experience the best of the Quartier Latin and the rest of the 5th arrondissement, the cherry on top is to book a room in the Hôtel Pilgrim. This hotel offers spa services, has its own fitness center, and serves tasty breakfasts each morning. Incredible!
✨ Luxury Choice: Hôtel Jardin de Cluny
For those of you who are truly looking to take your holiday in the French capital to a whole new level, I give you the Hôtel Jardin de Cluny. This particularly stylish and recently renovated accommodation is all you have ever dreamt of: high class, immaculately clean, and perfectly located.
💰 Budget Pick: Hotel Apolonia Paris Mouffetard, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western
I believe there is no better compromise than the Hotel Apolonia Paris Mouffetard, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western when it comes to cheap accommodations in the Latin quarter. While its rooms are quiet and offer quality sleep, it boasts a particularly nice location.
6. 1st arrondissement
I have decided to put the 1st arrondissement right after the Quartier Latin because of their similarities: both safe, both centrally located, both amazing… but both expensive.
Perfect for first-timers in the French capital because of its ideal location, the 1st arrondissement offers prime access to all the main attractions (such as the Louvre Museum), whilst having so many transportation options that you can easily go anywhere else in Paris.
No matter what your main interests are, the 1st arrondissement has something to offer you: with all of its different atmospheres, depending on where exactly you choose to stay, it will feel like a completely different place.
Plus, it is one of the best neighborhoods for shopping, so, if you’re into that, you’re going to have a fantastic getaway.
Best location
Tons of transportation
Ideal for shopping
Different atmospheres
Pretty pricey
Where to Stay in the 1st arrondissement
As memorable of an experience as staying in the 1st arrondissement can be, your holiday cannot go well if you have the wrong hotel. For an unforgettable stay, you will need accommodation. I can tell you more about three of them:
✅ Best Hotel: Hotel Louvre Montana
The Hotel Louvre Montana is definitely the best hotel you can wish for in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, mostly thanks to its excellent location.
Not only does this place have all you need, but its interior is particularly tastefully decorated, and its staff is caring and smiling, and will make sure all you wonder about is answered.
✨ Luxury Choice: Château Voltaire
Do you want to experience the best of luxury, the French way? Because that is exactly what you’re in for if you decide to stay in the Château Voltaire.
In this particularly fancy hotel, you will sleep on the most comfortable beds of your lives, enjoy a luxurious decoration and overall interior, and even have access to private services.
💰 Budget Pick: Studio opéra paris
I’m aware of how expensive the 1st arrondissement can be, but this place will surprise you. It is ideal for travelers on a budget who want a superb experience right in the center of Paris. Calm and nicely located, it is inside an old, stunning building.
7. 16th arrondissement
Next up on this list is the 16th arrondissement, a quiet yet enjoyable area. For those of you who enjoy the vibe of the 15th, you will love the 16th all the same, because it also feels like a residential area and is particularly safe.
Although there are slightly fewer activities in this arrondissement than in others, it boasts its own incredibly beautiful green areas, such as the Bois de Boulogne, which is superb by day.
Also, maybe you want to stay a bit further away from the main action of the center: this arrondissement is then for you!
Actually, even though it is remotely located, it has enough transportation options for you to go anywhere you’d please, all the while you’ll stay in a quaint area. Just awesome!
Stunning green spaces
Particularly calm
Transportation options
Locals are not very welcoming
Expensive
Where to Stay in the 16th arrondissement
Staying in a residential area such as the 16th arrondissement is wonderful for a relaxing holiday. But, if you want your stay to be memorable, you’ll want a nice hotel. Here are 3 of them you cannot go wrong with:
✅ Best Hotel: Hôtel Keppler
The crème de la crème of the 16th arrondissement comes in the form of the Hôtel Keppler, a lovely accommodation with unexpected yet tasteful decoration.
With its nice and responsive staff, this accommodation is bright and clean, and is located right next to the famous Champs-Élysées!
✨ Luxury Choice: Hotel The Peninsula Paris
If you want not just any luxurious option of the 16th arrondissement, but rather the best of them all, I give you the Hotel The Peninsula Paris.
There, you will enjoy an on-site Michelin-starred restaurant, a dressing room, a modern bathroom, and clothing stores within the facility. Just amazing!
💰 Budget Pick: Studio sur les quais de Seine
Just because the 16th arrondissement is quite pricey doesn’t mean there aren’t cheaper hotel options such as the Studio sur les quais de Seine.
In a cozy and well-decorated room, you will love your nicely located stay. Also, believe it or not, you will have your own, sunny terrace!
8. 14th arrondissement
The 14th arrondissement is perfect for shopping aficionados. Although it offers a bit less cultural activities compared to other neighborhoods, it is still a safe and interesting area to stay.
There are so many shops, bars, and restaurants that you are guaranteed to never run out of stuff to discover, or of excellent food to taste.
If you want to have fun nights out, taste all the best of French cuisine, or simply chill in a café all day long while feeling very safe, the 14th arrondissement is for you.
Also, even though it is pretty far from the heart of the capital, you can easily reach it thanks to the metro, and you won’t feel too isolated. However, maybe you won’t ever feel the need to leave this family-friendly area!
Plenty of shops and bars
Easy access to the city center
Family-friendly
Fewer cultural options
Can be dirty
Where to Stay in the 14th arrondissement
Want to spend a cool stay in the 14th arrondissement and try one of its many bars and restaurants? Great idea, but you’ll need accommodation. Here, I have three personal recommendations you should try:
✅ Best Hotel: Drawing House
In the Drawing House, you will enjoy an immaculate interior with peculiar decoration… as well as an indoor swimming pool! Everything there is so unique and so comfortable at the same time, so go and book a room!
✨ Luxury Choice: Maison Lavaud
Ideally located in a quaint area, the Maison Lavaud is for sure the best luxury hotel you can wish for in the 14th arrondissement. Serving copious breakfasts, this accommodation is clean and comfortable, as well as very spacious and nicely decorated. All in all, a fantastic place!
💰 Budget Pick: hotelF1 Paris Porte de Châtillon
For those of you who are looking for some of the cheapest options Paris has to offer, this is one of them! Boasting record low prices, this hotel has all you need, from a responsive staff to a bright and equipped room. Wonderful!
9. 2nd arrondissement
Located right next to the 1st arrondissement, the 2nd arrondissement is centrally located.
Not only does this mean that you will have prime access to all of the main attractions of the city, but also that there are tons of transportation options for you to reach any place in the capital in a heartbeat. Besides, it is another safe place to stay in Paris.
The area itself is mostly known for hosting La Bourse de Paris (Stock Exchange), but also some of Paris’ most beautiful “Passages” (pathways), those hidden covered galleries lined up with cute stores, bookshops, cafés, and restaurants. The most famous of them are the Passage du Grand Cerf and Gallerie Vivienne.
And despite the unfortunate lack of green spaces, the 2nd arrondissement makes up for it with a broad range of good restaurants and shops. So, if you want to go out, this is another fantastic place!
Tons of shops and restaurants
Loads of transportation options
Very few green spaces
Where to Stay in the 2nd arrondissement
Just because of its central location, the 2nd arrondissement doesn’t only have suitable hotels. In fact, I believe three of them stand out, and these are the ones I’m presenting to you:
✅ Best Hotel: La Maison Favart
In case you don’t believe me that La Maison Favart is the best hotel you could hope for in the 2nd arrondissement, just have a quick glance at its decoration: mystical, modern, and stunning! Offering a fitness center and free tea and coffee, this hotel is the best compromise you can find.
✨ Luxury Choice: Apartments Du Louvre – Le Marais
Speaking of incredible decoration, these apartments are another very serious contender, and they are an incredible luxury option in the center of Paris. Located right next to a metro line, this hotel is perfectly situated and is overall of a high standard.
💰 Budget Pick: Charmante chambre de bonne a Montorgueil Paris
Are you looking for a cheap and authentic experience in the 2nd arrondissement? Then just go for the Charmante chambre de bonne a Montorgueil Paris, which is incredibly cheap for such a pricey neighborhood.
Despite its small size, this place has all you need, and you won’t need to sacrifice any of your comfort to save some budget.
10. 17th arrondissement
Last but definitely not least on this top 10 list is the 17th arrondissement, another perfectly suitable area for a safe stay in Paris.
Similarly to a few other arrondissements, it is ideal for those of you who love shopping (and, believe me, it is a must-do in such a fantastic city as Paris), as there are plenty of options for you.
On top of that, it is a more relaxing area of the capital, and its streets are pretty quiet, especially on Sundays, making it an ideal getaway for those of you who don’t want to stay within the city center, but rather in a quieter place.
I have to warn you that, if you’re afraid of rats, you might not want to stay there, as you could see some of them in the wild.
Plenty of parks
Quiet streets
Lots of shops
Can find rats in the wild
Hard to drive around
Where to Stay in the 17th arrondissement
Do shopping and relaxing times sound good to you? Do you want to stay in the 17th arrondissement? What a very nice idea; but what could be even nicer for a memorable stay is to pick one of these options:
✅ Best Hotel: Zoku Paris
The staff of the Zoku Paris is for sure what’s best about it: both nice and competent, they will make sure your stay goes as smoothly as possible. That’s not all there is to it though, as it is also nicely located and boasts high-quality equipment.
✨ Luxury Choice: B Montmartre
The rooms of the B Montmartre are just dreamy. Stylishly decorated, they are intelligently furnished and offer beautiful views of the garden. Speaking of the garden, it is a big plus for the accommodation, as you can enjoy your breakfast or have a drink there!
💰 Budget Pick: Odalys City Paris XVII
The last hotel on this already long list is the Odalys City Paris XVII, the hotel with the best value-for-money ratio. There, you will stay in bright and modern rooms and will be located near the metro.
Areas to Avoid in Paris
I’ve made a whole post dedicated to safety in Paris and the dangerous areas you should stay clear of. 👉 Check it out here!
But to quickly answer the question, here’s the list of the areas known to be dangerous and that you should avoid:
- Stalingrad, between the 10th and 9th arrondissements
- Gare du Nord in the 10th arrondissement
- Gare de l’Est – Strasbourg Saint-Denis in the 10th arrondissement
- Barbès-Rochechouart in the 18th arrondissement
- Boulevard de Clichy between the 9th and 18th arrondissements
- Porte de Clignacourt in the 18th arrondissement
- Porte de la Chapelle in the 18th arrondissement
Just to put your mind at ease, I need to mention that Paris isn’t more dangerous than other cities around the world. But like any other major city, some areas are less safe than others and you have to be cautious.
The places listed above are known to be dangerous particularly at night, so prefer not to book your hotel there.
Final Thoughts on the Safe Areas in Paris
Well there you have them, these were my top 10 safe places to stay in Paris France. I hope you loved them, and that you found the place you needed the most.
To wrap it up, I think it’s important to repeat that Paris is globally safe, so you don’t need to worry too much. Just be cautious about your belongings and avoid dangerous behavior, like any other big city in the world.
In case you’re still hesitating about your home base and want to prioritize your safety above anything else, remember that the 6th arrondissement is the safest area of Paris. I’m sure you’ll adore all the cultural activities, as well as the laid-back and authentic atmosphere there!

Thank you Kevin for the great information! My son is coming over this fall for a year to be a teachers assistant at Nanterre University. He will have to find a place to live while he is there. Do you recommend that he stay near the University or another area?
Any feed back is greatly appreciated! Mary
Hi Mary, sorry for my late reply! I definitely recommend him staying near Nanterre University. It’s a cool area, with lots of students. It’s best to avoid the Nanterre Prefecture area and the Picasso area though
