Praia do Camilo – 225 steps to paradise!
Praia do Camilo is probably one of the prettiest beach in the whole Algarve. You’ll have to climb 225 steps to reach it, but that’s a small price to pay for such a dreamy beach.
Tucked away from the winds at the bottom of cliffs, its clear blue water and white sand beach will blow you away. Let’s discover one of Algarve’s finest gems!
Where is Praia do Camilo?
Praia do Camilo is located on the Algarve coast, south of Portugal. It’s a 10 minutes drive from Lagos, one of the place you’re likely to stay if you visit the Algarve.
If you’re staying in Lagos, you can definitely walk to Camilo beach. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the beach from Lagos, and you can stop at other beaches on the way, such as Praia do Pinhao, Praia Dona Ana, or Ponta da Piedade.
Is Camilo Beach really that incredible?
Well, I guess that depends on your definition of incredible.
I’ll list all of the reasons why I think Camilo beach is incredible, and then you can make up your mind based on these:
1- The beach is located at the bottom of tall cliffs, protecting it from the winds, and making you feel like you’re somewhere totally different from Portugal.
2- The colors are amazing! Orange cliffs, white sand and clear blue waters. True definition of visual satisfaction for me
3- 225 steps to paradise. To reach the beach, you have to go down 225 steps, and inevitably climb up these 225 steps when leaving. This makes the beach a bit harder to reach than the other beach in the area, and this will ward off some of the crowds
4- Secret tunnels! Whaaaat? You can reach a different beach by going through a cave. How cool is that?!
If these 4 reasons didn’t convince you that Praia do Camilo is incredible, maybe these images will:
So what do you think? Would you say that Praia do Camilo is incredible? Well I guess the best way to find out is to book your flight and go see it by yourself!
What you need to know before visiting Praia do Camilo
If you’re planning to add Praia do Camilo on your list of places to visit in Algarve, then I have a few tips for you to keep in mind when visiting this beach. You can find them below:
- go very early: Camilo beach is really popular, and it gets crowded really quick. If you want to truly enjoy the beach, get up early and watch sunrise there
- go at low tide: the beach is pretty small, as it’s closed off by cliffs. When the tide rises, the beach shrinks, and the amount of space available goes down. During high tide, the beach is at its smallest, and you’ll have to battle for a spot to sit/lay down
- avoid july & august: if you are flexible with dates, the best is to visit in May, June or September. You’ll still get great weather, and you’ll avoid the crowds of tourists
- pack food & drink: once you go down all the steps, you won’t find anything besides the beach down there. If you plan to stay a while on the beach, make sure to pack some food and something to drink

Hi,
Do you have any hotels or B&B that you recommend that are walking distance from the beach since I don’t have a car?
Thanks
Hello Mouna, you can try the Uma Casa a Beira Sol, it’s a nice guest house only 10 minutes walk from Praia do Camilo and the other beaches in the area! If it’s full my second choice would be Costa d’Oiro Ambiance Village. Enjoy your stay!
