Hostels used to be my go-to when traveling—sometimes, I’d even sleep under the stars!

But since meeting my wife, I’ve upgraded to places with a bit more comfort (like private bathrooms). Nothing too fancy, but definitely a step up!

That said, we both have plenty of experience staying in hostels and agree on the must-have items to make the experience smoother and more comfortable.

Here’s our essential hostel packing list with everything you need for a comfy, hassle-free stay!

The Must-Have for a Hostel Stay

The items listed below are the basics, the ones that can ruin your trip if you forget them:

1. Suitcase with a Lock

It’s no secret that theft is a risk in hostels. With shared dorms and people coming and going all the time, it’s something every traveler should be prepared for.

That’s why a suitcase with a built-in lock is a must-have. Not only does it keep your belongings safe from wandering hands, but you also don’t have to worry about misplacing a separate lock. It’s one less thing to keep track of, giving you peace of mind.

2. Padlock

Most hostels provide lockers for guests, but you’ll need to bring your own padlock to use them.

A sturdy padlock ensures your belongings are safely stored while you’re out exploring or sleeping, giving you peace of mind throughout your stay. It’s a simple yet crucial item to pack, so don’t overlook it when preparing for your hostel trip.

3. Power Bank

Hostels are often full of travelers trying to charge their devices, and outlets can quickly become a hot commodity. You might find yourself competing for that one available plug or realizing there’s none near your bed!

That’s where a power bank becomes your lifesaver. It ensures your phone or other devices stay charged, no matter the situation. Sure, you’ll need to recharge it eventually, but that’s far easier to manage than scrambling for an outlet.

Anker Portable Charger, 20,000mAh Power Bank, Battery Pack with 2-Port, 15W High-Speed Charging for iPhone 15/15 Plus/15 Pro/15 Pro Max, 14/13/12 Series, Samsung Galaxy, and More (Black)

4. Universal Travel Adapter

Realizing you can’t charge your phone or laptop because you didn’t bring the right adapter when arriving at your hostel is an issue no one wants to deal with. That’s why packing a universal travel adapter is a must (I always travel with one).

It works with plug types around the globe, ensuring you’re always prepared. This one even includes USB ports, so you can charge multiple devices at once.

5. Anti-Theft Bag

Hostels are lively places, and keeping your belongings safe in such an environment can feel like a challenge. With so many people coming and going, theft or accidental mix-ups can happen more easily than you’d think.

That’s why an anti-theft bag is a game-changer. Designed with hidden zippers and slash-proof materials, it keeps your essentials secure whether you’re in the dorm, out exploring, or on a crowded bus.

6. Flashlight

Waking up in a dark hostel dorm or trying to find something in your bag without disturbing others is never fun. That’s where a flashlight comes in handy.

Whether it’s a compact keychain flashlight or a headlamp, it’s the perfect solution for navigating dimly lit spaces or late-night trips to the bathroom. It’s lightweight, easy to pack, and ensures you’re never caught fumbling around in the dark.

7. Travel Insurance

Staying in hostels is part of the adventure, but unpredictable things can happen while you’re traveling—lost or stolen belongings, illnesses, or accidents. That’s why having travel insurance, like Heymondo (the one I always use), is such a smart choice.

It provides coverage for unexpected situations, giving you peace of mind no matter where you are. Travel is always better when you know you’re covered!

Items to Pack for a Practical & Comfy Hostel Stay

Below are the items that are true game-changers, making your hostel experience far more comfortable and enjoyable:

8. Packing Cubes

Staying in a hostel often means living out of your suitcase or backpack, and digging around for what you need can get frustrating fast.

Packing cubes are organizers that help you keep everything neat in your bag and easy to find, saving you from rummaging through a pile of clothes every time you need something. You just need to pack smartly upfront, and you’re all set.

9. Earplugs & Sleeping Mask

I never stay in hostels without earplugs or a sleeping mask. Ever.

From roommates coming in late to lights left on, getting the rest you need can feel impossible without them. These simple essentials make all the difference.

10. Microfibre Towel

You can’t always count on hostels to provide towels, and when they don’t, a microfiber towel is a lifesaver.

It’s lightweight, dries quickly, and takes up almost no space in your bag. Whether it’s for a shower or a trip to the beach, it’s the perfect solution to avoid bulky, damp towels. If you’re unsure about the amenities, prefer packing one just in case.

11. Mini Travel Toiletries

Staying in a hostel means packing light and dealing with shared bathrooms, where space is often limited.

Mini travel toiletries are small enough to fit in your bag and make it easy to grab what you need without juggling bulky bottles. You can either buy travel-sized versions of your favorite products or get empty bottles and fill them with what you usually use.

11. Flip Flops

Packing flip-flops is a no-brainer for me, but even more when staying in a hostel. Walking around barefoot isn’t always the most hygienic option.

Flip-flops are lightweight, easy to slip on, and perfect for showers or lounging around the hostel. Whether you’re heading to the bathroom or hanging out in common areas, flip-flops keep your feet clean and protected.

12. Travel Pillow

If you’re sensitive to bedding or pillows, bringing a travel pillow can save your trip. Hostel beds aren’t always the most comfortable, and having your own pillow ensures a better night’s sleep.

The one I recommend is even better—it doubles as a blanket! Whether you’re looking for extra warmth or just want something familiar, it’s versatile, lightweight, and easy to pack.

13. Sleeping Bag Liner

If you’re particular about cleanliness or just want an extra layer of comfort, consider packing a sleeping bag liner. Hostel bedding isn’t always what you’d hope for, and having your own liner adds a layer of hygiene and peace of mind.

The one I recommend is designed for hostel bed or an outdoor setup, lightweight, compact, and perfect for adding warmth or keeping cool, depending on the season.

  • COZY UP WITH YOUR NEW PILLOW: No need to settle for a lumpy hotel pillow or a pile of clothes - just...

14. Nightwear

Unlike home, you can’t sleep naked in a shared dorm—you’ll need at least a minimal layer of clothing for comfort and modesty.

Lightweight, breathable pajamas or loungewear are perfect. They keep you comfortable while respecting the shared space. You’ll be prepared for late-night trips to the bathroom or unexpected situations!

What Not to Pack for a Hostel Stay?

Here’s what not to pack for a hostel stay:

  • Large suitcases: They’re bulky, hard to store, and take up too much space in dorms.
  • Valuables: Leave expensive jewelry and high-value items at home to avoid loss or theft.
  • Too many toiletries: Stick to travel-sized bottles; hostels often provide basics.
  • Cooking equipment: Most hostels have shared kitchens with everything you need.

Packing light and keeping it practical makes your stay so much easier and more enjoyable.
