Cabo Vidio, Cudillero – Epic Coastline & Stunning Views in Asturias
Cabo Vidio, Cudillero, is an epic coastline with rugged cliffs and a lighthouse.
It offers stunning views, and it’s definitely a must-visit on the Asturias Costa Verde.
Here’s everything that you need to know about Cabo Vidio to plan your trip there:
Where is Cabo Vidio?
Cabo Vidio is located in Asturias, on the northern coast of Spain. It’s a 1 hour drive from the cities of Gijón and Oviedo, and around 1h from Somiedo Natural Park.
There are plenty of nice beaches in the area, and it’s pretty close to Playa del Silencio, another must-see gem in Asturias (10mn drive).
How to Get to Cabo Vidio, Cudillero?
It’s really easy to get to Cabo Vidio, as the road goes all the way to the edge of the cliff.
Drive to Oviñana, then drive through the village all the way to the sea. The CU-8 road will take you to the lighthouse, and you can park your car there on the side of the road.
If you’re staying nearby in Cudillero for example, you can reach Cabo Vidio by bus. There are 2 buses from the city to Oviñana: one early morning, and the other early afternoon. The 2 return buses are early afternoon and late afternoon. Check more details here.
From Oviñana, it’s a 15 minutes walk to reach Cabo Vidio.
Exploring Cabo Vidio
After hiking for several days in Picos de Europa, we needed to rest for a bit and decided to head to the coast. Short walks, warm sun and the sea breeze, perfect to unwind & recover!
We drove to the Cabo Vidio lighthouse, parked on the side of the road, and right away were greeted by a stunning view of the coast.
After enjoying that view for a bit, we headed to the main attraction in the area: the Faro Cabo Vidio, a lighthouse on the cliff.
The Faro de Cabo Vidio
The Faro de Cabo Vidio in itself is a little underwhelming; it’s a small lighthouse, and hasn’t been well preserved over the years. The lighthouse is surrounded by a stone wall, and you can’t get inside.
The real attraction there is not the lighthouse; it’s the view.
Going to the Edge
I went past the lighthouse on the small trail, all the way to the edge. There you get a different view than before; you can see the massive rock formations in the sea.
The Secret Cave
In Cabo Vidio, Oviñana, there’s a secret cave under the cliff. The cave is known as Cueva de la Iglesiona de Cabo Vidio, and you can get inside.
Reaching the cave is definitely a challenge, but if you’re up for a little adventure, it’s the place to go! You go down the side of the cliff using ropes, and climbing down on rocks.
The cave can only be reached at low-tide; sadly it was high-tide when I got there, and I couldn’t get to it. I climbed down the first half of the way using the ropes, but the rest of the way was underwater and I couldn’t get further.
Walking on the Cliffs
After exploring the area around the lighthouse, the sun was beginning to go down and we went back up to the road. We went to walk on the cliffs, following the trail, to see if we could get some other epic views.
We soon reached a nice spot on the edge of the cliff, with absolutely breathtaking views of the coast.
As we got there, the light started to change, and we got blessed with that sweet golden light. We were like 2 little kids on Christmas, genuinely happy, and we stayed on that cliff for close to an hour.
Simply living in the moment, taking photos and enjoying the gorgeous views.
Sunset at the Mirador del Sablón
To finish the day, we kept walking down south to explore more of the coastline.
I saw a group of people standing on the cliff in the distance, and decided to get closer. Turns out it was a bunch of local photographers, all set up on the Mirador del Sablón, waiting for the sun to set.
I set down my bag, and spent the sunset there, watching the sun dip in the sea and the sky changing colors. Oh and obviously I flew the drone a bit!
When the last colors left the sky, we went back up on the road, and ate at a local foodtruck, la Soluneta foodtruck. Great burgers and great fries, definitely recommend if you visit from July to end of September, the only time of the year when the foodtruck is there.
With a full stomach and a hot coffee to go, we were on our way to our next destination: Somedio Natural Park.
Best Viewpoints in Cabo Vidio
If you’re like me, you’ll probably be looking for the best spot, to snap that perfect picture. Or simply to enjoy the view, that’s fine too!
Here are my 4 recommended spots in Cabo Vidio, Asturias
1. Bench in front of the sea
This is the first spot I saw when getting to Cabo Vidio, as it’s right next to the road in front of the lighthouse.
It’s a simple wooden bench, but it offers a stunning view over the sea and the coast. A great place to just sit down and chill, or have lunch with a view.
Location: See in Google Maps
2. Bench on top of the cliffs
The second spot is also a bench, located right next to the lighthouse.
It’s on top of the cliff, and you get sweeping views of the Cabo Vidio coastline.
Location: See in Google Maps
3. Mirador de Cueva
This 3rd viewpoint is my favorite one: the mirador de Cueva. It’s located a bit down south from the lighthouse, and it’s really easy to spot thanks to the fishing boat on display.
The view from the mirador is great, but the best one is right next to it. When facing the sea at the mirador, follow the trail on your right, it will get you on the cliff over the beach.
Be careful when you’re on the edge of the cliff, don’t go too far and watch your steps.
Location: See in Google Maps
4. Mirador del Sablón
And finally the last spot is another great mirador Cabo Vidio has to offer: the Mirador del Sablón. It’s right down the coast from the Mirador de Cueva, and you can walk from one to the other in 15 minutes.
There’s a bench on the edge, but it’s a popular spot for local photographers (as you can see on the picture above) so you might not get to sit. Either way, it’s a wonderful view, and it’s where I watched the sunset from when exploring Cabo Vidio.

I am an old timer, but I have traveled the world, sailed open oceans in the Pacific, and Caribbean, climbed some high peaks and had my time underwater too. I cannot remember seeing such an incredible collection of photographs that excited me. There are few artists in this world, but unhesitatingly, you are one hellova artist. If you have your work in a book(s), I am definitely a customer.
As far as travel advice, we are going to probably end up spending more time in the Northern provinces of Spain and perhaps never get to Portugal.
