Product Reviews – Best Wide Angle Lens for Sony a6400

When the Sony a6400 was first relased in early 2019, there wasn’t a lot of options for wide-angle lenses.

In fact, the Sony 10-18mm f/4 was pretty much the only decent choice. But since then, lens manufacturers have released many new lenses for the Sony a6400, including wide angle lenses.

Now there are more options on the market, and it got more complicated to choose the right one. But don’t worry, I’ve done all the hard work for you.

After a careful review process, I’ve selected 4 wide angle lenses for Sony a6400; each one is the best in its own category. Here they are:

🥇 Overall Best: Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 RXD

🎥 For Photo + Video: Sony 10-18mm f/4 OSS

💰 Budget Pick: Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 AF

Best Prime: Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN

Alright, now time to check the details of each of them!

Step aside Sony 10-18mm f/4; the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 RXD is here to take the #1 spot!

This lens has just been relased in mid-2021, and it has already taken the title of best wide angle lens for a6400.

It has a great focal range, from 11mm to 20mm, and it’s the first wide angle Sony E-mount lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8! Image sharpness is great across the frame, and even better than the Sony 10-18mm wide open (similar image quality when stepping down to f/8).

On top of this, it also comes with weather sealing, which goes pretty well with the weather sealing of the Sony a6400 camera, and will allow you to shoot in all weather.

I have only 1 regret about this lens, it’s the lack of image stabilization. If you plan to shoot videos, it’s definitely a big con.

Pros

Great focal range

Fast f/2.8 lens

Great sharpness

Weather sealed

Cons

No image stabilization

As you read above, the Sony 10-18mm f/4 OSS was the best wide lens for Sony a6400, until the newly released Tamron.

While everything about this lens is great (great focal range, great sharpness), the Tamron does it better. If you’re looking for a photography lens, there really isn’t any reason to pick this one over the Tamron.

However if you’ll use the wide-angle lens to shoot both photos and videos, then the Sony is a much better choice. Why? Because unlike the Tamron it has OSS (Optical Steady Shot), to compensate for the lack of image stabilization in the a6400.

Pros

Great focal range

Image stabilization

Great sharpness

Cons

Not weather sealed

Issues focusing in low-light

Can’t afford the 1 grand for a Sony a6400 wide lens? Then you’ll love the Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 AF!

For years, the best budget choice was the Rokinon 12mm f/2.0, but I always had a hard time recommending it because it didn’t have autofocus. However Rokinon just released the AF version in 2021, and it’s now an awesome lens for a low price.

If you want to spend even less, you can still go for the manual focus version.

Overall it’s a good lens with great image quality; the main downside is that it’s a prime lens and you can’t zoom in/zoom out.

Pros

Best value for money

Fast f/2.0 aperture

Light & compact

Weather sealed

Cons

No image stabilization

Fixed focal length

And finally, the last great option for a Sony a6400 wide lens:  the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN.

It’s the best prime wide-angle lens you can get for your a6400, with excellent image quality, and a fast f/1.4 aperture. This makes it one of the best lenses for low-light photography, perfect to shoot stars, and great for portraits too with a nice bokeh.

Apart from the obvious cons (can’t zoom in/zoom out, no image stabilization), I also find it bulky for a prime lens; it’s the heaviest and biggest lenses out of the 4 featured in this guide.

Pros

Great value for money

Excellent sharpness

Fast f/1.4 aperture

Cons

Heavy for a prime lens

Fixed focal length

No image stabilization

Final Thoughts

So there you have them all, my 4 recommended picks for wide angle lenses for Sony a6400.

The overall best choice is the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 RXD, recently released mid 2021 and which took over the #1 spot.

It has a good focal range, great image quality, it’s a fast f/2.8 lens and it’s also weather sealed! It’s everything you need for a wide-angle lens, and definitely one of the best piece of glass you can put in front of your camera as a landscape photographer.
