one of the biggest tunnel tents camping in there is great

What is a Tunnel Tent?

A tunnel tent is a type of tent, just like a cabin tent or a teepee tent.

Tunnel tents are made of poles bent to create an arch, and the tent fabric attached to the arches, creating a tunnel.

People often call a tunnel tent a “pop up tunnel tent”, because once you’ve inserted the poles in the tent it will pop up into form.

They often offers a lot of space, with a good height allowing you to fully stand up inside the tent, and an easy setup. However they are big & bulky, and are only suited for car camping, where you won’t have to carry your tent very far.

How Do You Pitch a Tunnel Tent in the Wind?

Don’t worry, tunnel tents are easy to set up in the wind thanks to their design.

Start by laying down the tent flat on the ground, with the main door facing the wind; you can put rocks or bags on the tent to prevent it from flying away. Then, stake the 4 corners of the tent in the ground.

Once the tent is laid down and secured, open the main door. The wind will get into the tent, and you will see your tent taking form, almost pitching by itself.

Now take the poles, extend them and insert them in the designated area through the fabric. Secure both ends of each pole in the footprint, and your tent will be almost ready.

Finish by setting up the guylines to stabilize your tent, and you’re done! After setting up your tunnel tents, camping can begin!

What Makes a Great Tunnel Tent?

When looking for the best tunnel tents, there are a few things you should check to see if it fits your needs. I’ve listed the different criteria below, to give you more info on how I selected these tents to be featured as the best of their category.

This might also help you decide on which tent is the best for you.

1- Enough space for everyone

The first thing to check is the space inside the tent. You need to make sure the tent has enough space to fit everyone, + your gear (unless you plan to store the gear in your car).

What makes the best tunnel tent is also the height: can you fully stand up in the tent?

2- Weatherproof

When picking your tunnel tent, check to see if it’s weatherproof.

Is the tent completely waterproof? In tunnel tents, you’ll often find an extra room (“living room”), but these rooms don’t always have a floor. The very best tents are completely waterproof, even for the extra room.

Is it well-insulated and good for cold weather?

Of course this will vary depending on where you plan to use the tent: if you will use it solely in hot & dry areas, then you don’t need weatherproof features.

3- Ease of setup

If you’re an experienced camper, this might not be as important.

But if you want to save yourself the trouble of having to pitch a tent, then the ease of setup of the tent is something you’ll need to check.

How long does it take to set up the tent? Is is easy to set up?

And the same thing for packing it away: how long does it take, and can you easily fit it back in the carry bag?

If you absolutely need a very easy tent to set up, check out this guide of the best 8 person instant tents.

4- Multiple doors & rooms

Do you all want to sleep in the same area? Otherwise, you’ll need to check if the tent has multiple rooms, to create some privacy.

With a lot of person sleeping in the tent, it’s also nice to have several doors: imagine having to pee in the middle of the night, and having to go through the first room, walk over everyone and open the main door. Ugh.

One front door + a door in the back is the best to allow for easy entry.

5- Good ventilation

And finally we’re looking at ventilation: having a good air flow in the tent is important, especially since you’ll be a lot of people inside the tent and it can quickly feel damp without proper ventilation.

Things to Know About Tent Size

Tent size is a tricky subject.

Most of the time, tents are grouped by size, depending on how many people can sleep inside: 1 person tents, 2 person tents, 4 person tents, and so on.

But how do tents manufacturers define how many people can sleep inside?

They just see how many people can lay down inside the tent, taking all space available.

This means sleeping in a camping bag, with almost no space between people, and it might mean sleeping with heads next to feet.

It also means there will be no extra space for your gear.

a big 6 person tunnel tent in the wild

Want to be comfortable in your tent? Then you will often have to buy a bigger size tent to make sure that:

  • you have enough space to be comfortable
  • you have space for your gear
  • you can fit inflatable beds

With that being said, some tents are very spacious. It might be listed as a 4 person tent & be very spacious, meaning you’ll fit as 4 + your gear.

If you’re going on a backpacking trip, then size & weight of the tent are very important; in this case, you’ll probably want to get the regular size.

Now that you know what to expect for tent size, you’ll find below guides for other tent sizes that you might want to check out:
