The Best Tents for Camping with Dogs – Product Reviews
I absolutely love camping, and I will try to get out and sleep in the outdoors any change I get. There’s something so special about being out, sleeping under the stars and listening to the sounds of nature.
But do you know what’s even better? Sharing that adventure with your doggy.
As you might know if you’ve been camping before, camping can quickly become a terrible experience if you’re unprepared. And you don’t want to go camping with your dogs unprepared.
The first crucial step of planning your camping trip with your dogs is to find the best tent for dog owners. The perfect tent that your pup will love.
But how exactly do you choose the best tent for you & your dog? Good question.
I’ve listed below the 6 best tents for camping with dogs; they are all top-notch, are all perfect for bringing your pooch with you, and I’m sure they’ll be perfect for you.
Whether you’re looking for the best tent for 2 adults and a dog, the best backpacking tent for you & your dog, or the best dog friendly pop up tent, this guide has it all.
THE Best Tent for Camping with Dogs: Coleman Dome Tent with Screen Room
- Spacious tent has enough room for 6 people with 2 queen size airbeds
- Sets up in 15 minutes with rainfly and carry bag included
- Snag-free continuous pole sleeves with insta-clip attachments to stand up to winds
The Coleman dome tent with screen room is the best tent for dog owners on the market today.
The tent is spacious for a family of 4. It comes with an included screen room that will be perfect for your dogs when you go camping. The price point makes it the best value for money you’ll find, and makes sleeping in a tent with a dog a truly enjoyable experience.
My main regret is that the screen room is made of mesh walls, and can’t be covered. If you’re planning to camp in rainy areas, your dogs will definitely get wet. If you want rain protection for the screen room, check out the Wenzel Klondike tent below.
Check out this Youtube video below to see this tent in action!
Best Heavy Duty Tent with Dog Room: Wenzel 8 Person Klondike Tent
- Convertible screen room with inverted "T" style door and inside flap zippered windows
- Removable seam-sealed fly provides versatility
- Mesh roof vents, 2 zippered side windows with inside flaps
Planning to camp in rain-heavy areas?
The Wenzel Klondike tent is exactly what you need: a weatherproof tent that will keep you dry even under heavy rain, and that will withstand the winds.
What we love about this tent is how well protected the screen room is: it has the same bathtub bottom floor as the main room, and the mesh windows can be covered up with a rainproof cover. Your dogs will be perfectly safe from the rain & winds in this one!
Best Tent for Big Dogs: Coleman WeatherMaster Tent with Screen Room
- Spacious interior: Room for 2 queen-size airbeds and ample storage pockets to keep items organized.
- Easy Entry and Exit: Hinged door for fast, hassle-free access.
- Bug-Free Lounging: separate floorless screen room for insect-free relaxation.
Do you have very big dogs? Like a Great Dane or an English Mastiff?
Then you’ll definitely need a lot of room in your tent! The Coleman Weathermaster tent is a huge tent that can fit up to 6 adults, and 2 big dogs in the additional screen room.
The big screen room is perfect for your dogs. My only regret is that the screen room is not as well protected from the rain as the rest of the tent: there is no floor, and the front mesh wall is not covered.
However the tent is so huge that if heavy rain does come, there will be plenty of room inside for your dogs to join you. All in all, one of the best tents for families and dogs (and if you want even more space, check out these HUGE 12 person tents)

This one is a pop up tent, so you can literally throw it in the air and it will instantly pop; it’s now ready for your family & dogs to go in & relax.
The tent is spacious, it can fit up to 6 people but we find it best for 4 adults with gear. We love the covered vestibule which has a floor, perfect for the comfort of your dog!

The tent is in 2 parts: the first sleeping room where you’ll sleep (up to 2 adults), and an additional room that is perfect for your dogs. The tent is rainproof, and you & your dogs will be protected from the elements; not bad for a budget tent!
Important to note: there is no floor in the second room. It’s ok if your dog is used to sleep on the ground, or you’ll need to bring an extra footprint for extra comfort.

All of the tents reviewed above are great if you’re going to car camp – meaning you’ll carry all your gear in your car & set up tent nearby. But what if you want to go on a backpacking trip with your dog and carry a tent in your bag?
Well then the Clostnature lightweight backpacking tent is the perfect one for your epic camping trips with your dog!
The tent is light, which will make it easy to carry in your backpack. It has 2 doors and can be opened on the 2 sides, ideal for your dog to freely get in & out. Once the rainfly is on, you’ll also have 2 vestibules, on on each side, perfect for your dog to sleep sheltered from the rain & wind.
The main drawback is that there are no floors in the vestibules, which means your dog will be sleeping directly on the floor. Generally ok, but definitely something to consider if you’re camping on muddy terrain. Pack a footprint slightly bigger than the tent so that it will cover the floor of both vestibules.
So there you have them, the 6 best tents for camping with dogs! I hope you’ll find one that is perfect for what you need! If you want to know more about the selection process for these tents, or to have more info to help you decide on which one to pick, keep reading below.
What Makes a Great Tent for Camping with Dogs?
When looking for the best tent for camping with dogs, there are a few things you should check to see if it fits your needs. I’ve listed the different criteria below, to give you more info on how I selected these tents to be featured as the best of their category.
This might also help you decide on which tent is the best for you.
1- Space for Your Dog(s)
The first important thing to look for in a dog friendly tent is obviously space for your dog(s). As opposed to just making sure if the tent can fit enough people, you’ll need to check if there is extra space for your life companion.
There are several options for tents with space for dogs:
- Screen room: the best option is a screen room, an extra room usually designed as a space to store your gear or play during the day. A screen room is perfect for your dogs, and it’s where they’ll sleep
- Vestibule: the second option is to pick a tent with 1 or 2 vestibules; they are extra space on the side of your tent, not really in the tent but covered by the rainfly. This will allow your dog to be sheltered from the rain & winds. It’s usually the kind of space you’ll find in the best tents for backpacking with dogs, as backpacking tent need to be light and can’t have an extra screen room
- Extra space: the last option is simply to pick a tent with extra room. If you’re comfortable in having your dog sleep with you, then picking a tent with more room can be the solution (e.g. a 4 people tent for 2 adults and a dog)
2- Footprint for Your Dogs Too
A footprint is a durable material that is put under the tent to add extra comfort.
With the way we’re adding space for our dogs in the tents, with either a screen room or vestibules, there often isn’t any floor included. For example, a tent might have a screen room, but there won’t be any floor in the screen room.
Sometimes it’s a viable option, if you plan to camp in dry areas, and if your dog is used to sleep directly on the ground.
Otherwise, you’ll need to make sure the space for your dog has an included footprint. Alternatively, you can buy an extra footprint to use in the dog space.
3- Weatherproof
Trust me, you’ll hate the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night all wet from the rain. That’s why you need to make sure your tent is waterproof.
If you hate it, your dog will too. Extra space for your dog is nice, but it’s not as good if the dog space is not rainproof as well!
Of course, this doesn’t apply if you’re planning to camp only in dry areas.
4- Dog Doors
Look for a camping tent with dog door; this is a great feature that I’m sure you’ll love.
Dog doors in the tent can either be a hinged door that you can simply pull/push to open/close, or double doors in your tent so that your dog can go in & out of the tent from either side.
5- Strong Materials
I won’t tell you anything you didn’t know before when I say your dog’s nails can be a danger for fragile materials (RIP nice pillows…).
All the tents good for dogs feature sturdy & thick material, that will resist the pointy claws of your dogs.
If you go for a thin material, you’ll have a high risk of finding rips & holes in your tent after the night.
General Tips for Camping with Dogs
Will it be your first time camping with your dogs? Then read on for some helpful tips about camping with dogs!
1- Double-Check Your Dog’s ID Tag
The first advice for going camping with your dog is to double-check your dog’s ID tag! Of course we don’t want anything bad to happen when out camping, but you never know what could happen.
The best thing you can do to be prepared is simply to check that your dog’s ID tag is up to date with all necessary information; it will come in handy when needed!
2- Pack All Your Dog Gear
Ok I said pack all your dog gear, but you don’t actually need to bring the whole house. You do need to bring a few items, though:
- Leash
- Water & food bowls
- Poop bags
3- Check the Camp Site in Advance
Yep, don’t learn this the hard way. Some camp sites don’t allow dogs.
Save yourself from any trouble and check your camp site in advance to see if they allow dogs. If they do, check the dog regulations to make sure you comply with them once on site.
4- Keep Your Dog on the Leash
Yes, I know, you’re not going out in the outdoors to keep your dog on the leash.
However if it’s your first time camping or going on a big outdoors expedition, you don’t know yet how your dog will react to a new environment. How will your dog react to the local wildlife?
If you aren’t 100% confident that your dog will come back when called, keep it on a leash (or a tether/stake).
