Summer is an ideal season to discover the diverse continent of Europe. Whether you fancy basking on sandy beaches, discovering quaint villages and cultures, hiking in the wilderness, or partying the night away, there’s something for everyone!
When it comes to temperatures, the diversity doesn’t disappoint either. If you’re a sun worshipper, head to Southern Europe for some serious heat around the Mediterranean rim. For those who shun hot latitudes, the north of Europe is the place to be.
I know you may need inspiration or be overwhelmed by the plethora of choices, especially as some places in Europe are best avoided in the summer. So to help you out, here are 21 top destinations that are perfect to discover in summer.

1. Algarve, Portugal
With its breathtaking coastline, golden beaches, steep cliffs, and hidden coves, the Algarve is definitely one of the best places to visit in Europe. In fact, this is the best time of year to discover it, as the other seasons don’t allow you to take full advantage of its breathtaking beaches.
Located in the southernmost part of Portugal, the Algarve enjoys a sunny Mediterranean climate with warm temperatures, ideal for enjoying swimming, water sports, and outdoor activities. Its beaches are fantastic, but so are its walks, and nature lovers are in for a treat.
Beyond its natural beauty, the Algarve also attracts visitors with its picturesque fishing villages and lively cities.You’ll find many local markets, a lively cultural scene, and a lively nightlife. It’s an all-around destination that will delight young and old, families, couples, and party-goers alike.

2. Sardinia, Italy
Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia is an incredible combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a serene atmosphere, which is everything you need for a perfect summer getaway in Europe.
Wherever you go on the Italian island, you’re in for a treat: its coastline is made up entirely of immaculate beaches of white sand and crystal-clear waters, to the point you’ll think you’re in the Caribbean!
The inland has a more rugged landscape marked by spectacular mountains, gorges, and forests attracting adventurers and nature lovers with a wide range of hiking options and other outdoor activities.
Sardinia also has an amazing cultural heritage with beautiful cities such as Cagliari, Alghero, and Olbia which all have cool landmarks to visit. The island also boasts an array of ancient ruins and vibrant traditional festivals that provide insight into the local history and traditions.
I visited Sardinia in August 2022. I made a road trip across all the island with my wife, and it was amazing. The beaches and landcapes were mind-blowing as are the roads, which we loved driving along.

3. Cinque Terre, Italy
Let’s stay in Italy with another must-see destination, the Cinque Terre. Located on Italy’s east coast, it’s a national park listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, grouping together the five villages of Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso.
They’re so famous I’m sure you’ve already seen somewhere these picturesque cliffside colorful villages overlooking the beautiful blue sea. But they’re more than a postcard, these soulful villages deserve to be visited. They offer a laid-back atmosphere in a unique setting, with good food and friendly people.
As a natural park, it’s an ideal setting for hiking. There are numerous trails connecting the villages, offering mesmerizing views of the unique coastline and the villages facing the sea. There are also several beaches, with pebbles but with very clear turquoise water. And while summer may not be the ideal season to visit, it’s the best to enjoy them!
We’ve explored the Cinque Terre in 2018, so it’s been a while now, but it was an unforgettable trip for us. Seriously, the sunsets there were among the most beautiful I’ve seen in my life!

Located in the northwestern part of Spain, this region is an amazing option for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path vacation in Europe.
Asturias is famous for its wild nature, dramatic landscapes, green mountains, and rugged coastline dotted with secluded beaches. No bustling cities or crowded beaches here, you’ll find peace in a breathtaking natural paradise, warm but sheltered from the scorching heat found in other parts of Spain.
You can enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities here, including hiking, and kayaking, but also surfing as some of the beaches here are famous for their big waves.
History and culture buffs won’t be left out either as several monuments including pre-Romanesque churches can be visited. Food is also delicious here with local specialties such as fabada (bean stew) or sidra (sparkling cider).

5. Provence, France
Provence needs no introduction: this region of south-eastern France is incredibly famous the world over, and for a good reason. Whether you’re dreaming of lazy days in charming villages or adventurous outings in stunning landscapes, Provence has it all.

And I cannot not mention the famous lavender fields of Provence offering wonderful scenery like straight out of a painting, especially in early summer.
Provence is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen on earth! I explored the area in 2019, and I loved everything about it, especially the Callanques de Cassis. You can’t miss swimming there if you choose this destination!

France again, but with a completely different destination, not as famous as the latter but certainly a must-see, the Bassin d’Arcachon. Located in the southwestern part of the country, Arcachon Bay is blessed with a warm climate in summer, with sunny days that are not too hot thanks to the Atlantic breeze.
The area has several amazing natural wonders including the Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe which offers jaw-dropping views of the bay, and the Banc d’Arguin, a sand bank and nature reserve. Other lush pine forests and bird sanctuaries will delight nature lovers.
There are also several cool with a relaxed vibe seaside towns like Arcachon or Cap Ferret, both offering beautiful beaches, lively markets, and good restaurants. Speaking of food, the region is famous for its oysters you can taste in oyster farms.
Our trip to Arcachon is recent as we visited in early September 2023. It was awesome climbing the dune, and the view from the top over the whole bay is breathtaking. A sight I’ll never forget!

And let’s talk about the food – Cretan cuisine is a delicious journey through the Mediterranean, with fresh olive oil, creamy cheeses, and local wine. One of the best foods on earth!
I’ve been to Crete with my family when I was a teenager, and I remember pretty well how much fun we had there. Nes also visited on her own before we know each other in 2016 and had the same experience. A wonderful sunny holiday eating loukoumades, visiting landmarks and basking on the beaches. It’s our favorite Cycladic island.

The natural arch of Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, and Cheddar Gorge are some of the most exceptional sites here and you’ll have a plethora of coastal trails to enjoy.
The area also has plenty of little cute English villages with a cozy atmosphere and beautiful architecture like the villages of Shaftesbury, Corfe Castle Swanage, Weymouth, and Lyme Regis.
The Jurassic Coast is the first destination we’ve visited as a couple, so it holds a special place in our hearts. We were there in early spring 2018, and the weather was awful! We’d love to come back in the summer to be able to enjoy everything this nature haven has to offer.

Stretching along the Adriatic Sea, the Dalmatian Coast is the most popular destination in Croatia thanks to its exceptionally warm weather and lovely islands of crystal-clear waters.
Its most popular attraction is certainly the town of Dubrovnik which served as Westeros in the Game of Thrones TV show. Split is another wonderful town with amazing landmarks including the impressive Diocletian’s Palace.
Nature is equally beautiful here, especially in the Krka National Park or in the islands of Hvar with its lavender fields and waters, or the island of Vis known for its untouched beaches and hidden caves.
I traveled to Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast in 2016 with a group of friends. I didn’t expect much of this country, but I was literally amazed by it! The country has it all, beaches, waterfalls, national parks… It’s a whole adventure! Nes also visited it on her own in 2019 and had an amazing experience as well.

Ok, I’ve included not a destination but a whole country in this list. Because yes, Switzerland as a whole is such a true gem I couldn’t choose one single destination. Plus, the country is small and train trips are a thing here, particularly during the hot season.
Indeed, the efficient Swiss rail network means you can glide smoothly from the heart of one city to the next, enjoying the stunning landscapes that unfold from your window.
No beach here, but the attractions in Switzerland are nonetheless varied and include huge mountains, cute villages, and vibrant cities. You can start your trip from Zurich, and then take the train to Lucerne to spot its iconic Kapellbrücke and continue with the natural gems that are Interlaken, the Jungfrau region where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Alps. Zermatt, the Glacier Express, St. Moritz… There’s so much I couldn’t list them all. So simply follow the train’s route and spend an enchanting moment in Switzerland.
My father lives in Zurich, I’ve visited him several times but I never visited the country properly. It’s in my plans though, because from what little I’ve seen of it, the country is incredible.

Let’s be honest. What do we know about Albania? Very little.

We visited Copenhagen to celebrate my wife 30th birthday, and it was lovely! I didn’t have any expectation because it wasn’t on my bucket list, but I did enjoyed it a lot. The vibe here is a real thing to experience.
