The first item on this list of best castles in Spain is the Alcázar de Segovia. Built in 1430, the castle was turned into a prison for 200 years; it’s way nicer to be inside now, trust me you can visit without any worry.
Legend even has it that the Alcázar de Segovia was used by the Disney team as inspiration for the Cinderella Castle.

2- Alcázar de Toledo – Castle in Toledo, Spain
As soon as you approach Toledo, you notice the Alcázar, on top of the hill, dominating the whole city. It’s a huge palace with 4 towers, going back to ancient Roman time. The castle that you can see today was built at a later date, during medieval times.
The castle itself is an epic monument, and looks good from any perspective (my favorite is from the Mirador del Valle). Inside you’ll find the Army Museum, which retraces the history of Toledo.

The Castillo de La Mota draws its name from its location: it’s up on a mota, Spanish for hill.
It’s a massive medieval castle from the 14th century, recognized as a National Monument since 1904. It has a huge barbican (fortified walls around the castle), protecting the main yard and the main towers, and you can easily picture the epic battles that were fought there.

4- Castillo Templario de Ponferrada
The Castle of Ponferrada, or Castillo Templario de Ponferrada (Templar Castle of Ponferrada), was one of the biggest castles in northern Spain during medieval times. It was the place of residence of the Grand Master of the Knights Templar from 1178 to 1311.

5- Coca Castle
The Coca Castle, or Castillo de Coca, was built in the 15th century, and is a fine mix of Gothic & Moorish architecture (Mudejar style).
It is now the property of the Ministry of Agriculture, and hosts the Escuela de Capacitación Forestal (Forestry School). It’s still open to the public, and you can visit plenty of rooms inside the castle: the chapel, the weapons room, and the central keep.

6- Palace of the Kings of Navarre of Olite
As you guessed it from its name, the Royal Palace of Olite was the primary residence of King Charles III of Navarre. It was at one point one of the most luxurious castles in Europe; now the rooms are empty, but the visit is still worth it!
You’ll get to explore the many rooms, the cloister, and you can even climb up several towers for nice views over the city.

Sat up on a hill, the Peñafiel Castle is a very unique monument: both a castle, and a wine museum. By visiting the castle, you can combine 2 activities: medieval visit, and discovery of the Ribera del Duero area famous for its wine.
To enter the castle you need to join a group visit (no solo visits), but it’s worth it as you’ll get to the top of the castle, with amazing views over the surroundings.
The view of the castle itself is stunning, and a good idea to come enjoy the sunset after some wine tastings in the region.

The Castillo de Tossa de Mar is my favorite place in town for 2 reasons: first, it looks epic with the fortified walls above the water and second, the view from up there is simply mental!

The Alcazaba Fortress, or Alcazaba de Almería, is the second largest fortress built by the Muslims in Spain (right after the Alhambra de Granada), with over 1,400 meters of wall perimeter (4,600 feet).
With over 1,000 years of history, this moorish castle in Spain is a must-visit! There are 3 walled enclosures in the fortress, with a Christian castle in the 3rd one.

The Alhambra de Granada is indeed the largest moorish castle in Spain, and even the largest in Europe! There are several structures inside the Alhambra: a fortress, a watchtower, a palace, a Triumphal Arch, and more.

Built nearly 1,000 years ago, the Alcazaba de Málaga was restored several times, and is still a wonderful monument to visit today. I highly recommend going all the way up to the castle, where you’ll have a grand view of Málaga.

18- Castillo Monumento Colomares
The Colomares Castle is a bit special, because it’s not really a castle, but more a monument; a monument that looks like a castle.
Let me explain: it was built by Dr Esteban Martin as a tribute to Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. All of the monument is basically a huuuge history textbook, where you’ll learn about the history of the explorer and his travels.

19- Castillo de Peñíscola
If I should say one thing to explain why you should visit the Peniscola castle it would be this: look at that view!
The view you get from the top of the castle over the Peniscola bay is simply amazing, and well worth a visit in itself. Add on top of that a very history-rich castle, built in the 14th century by the Knights Templars and that became the residence of the pope Benedict XIII, and you have yourself a must-visit.

The Burgalimar Castle, also known as Castillo de Baños de la Encina, or Castillo de Bury Al-Hammam (baños or baths in arabic), is a Moorish castle famous for its 15 towers, all tower ten meters high (33 feet).
It’s also in a very good state of conservation, making it one of the best well-preserved moor castles in Spain.

21- Castillo de Belmonte
The Castillo de Belmonte is one of the castle we are lucky to be able to visit in Spain; abandoned in the 17th century, it was in a state of ruin in the 19th century. Thankfully it was restored in 1857 by Empress Eugenia de Montijo (wife of Napoleon III), and restored again recently in 2010.
Following that last renovation, the Castillo de Belmonte was opened to the public, and you can now visit it. In addition to the castle itself, you can see epic medieval combats around the castle (it hosted the first world championship of medieval combat in 2014) and historical recreations (recreation of life in the Middle Ages).

22- Atalaya Castle, an Important Moorish Castle, Spain
The Atalaya Castle, built in the 12th century, was an important castle in the moorish defense system of the Emirate of Cordoba. Even though the castle is ancient, it’s today in very good state thanks to restoration work in the second half of the 20th century.
You can now visit the castle, and even take part in theatrical visit that will take you back to medieval times.

The Miravet Castle is the perfect history-book example of the Templar Order: it’s an old moorish castle, conquered by the Knights Templar in 1153. After they took it over, the templars rebuilt the castle and fortified the whole city, creating one of the largest fortified complex in Spain & Europe.

The Almodovar Castle was built on a hill above the city, and it’s the first thing you see when you approach Almodovar. Due to its position, you will get sweeping views over the surrounding countryside from the top of the 2 high towers that you can climb.

26- Castillo de La Calahorra
The Castillo de La Calahorra was the first Renaissance building to be constructed in Spain, starting the transition from the Gothic style.
The castle is right at the foot of the massive Sierra Nevada mountain range, and it makes for spectacular views with the castle in front and the epic backdrop.
Privately owned, it’s possible to visit the castle but you need to contact the manager to arrange the visit; a bit of a hassle. Still, it’s a must-see in the region before starting your hikes in the Sierra Nevada.

The castle is now up for sale; that’s if you have around 3.5 million dollars to spare!
Since it’s privately owned, the castle cannot be visited, but the fairy tale castle is a nice sight to behold on a day trip from Bilbao.
